If a bomb goes off those fellers are deaf.

Those look like prototypes, as far as I know this was used before radar.

Believe it or not. That actually works. And amazingly well. But its very directional. Meaning you almost have to have the cones pointed at just the right spot.
Many years ago I worked for a waterproofing, tuckpointing & steeplejack company. and one of the ways we used to communicate with guys who were up high was through the safety cones like the ones you see along side a road where work is being done. Everyone knows that if you call out into one like a megaphone, your voice will come out louder. But also if you hold the opening of the small end against your ear.You will hear things at a distance better as well.
Try it with your kids sometime. Its one of the "cool" things you can show them.

I understand it works, but as you said you have to be pointed directly to that aircraft. As you don't know where the aircraft is I think this would be very hard to do. Is it possible to measure the distance with it? You know the speed at which the sound travels, but you don't know when the sound was created so this device (can't think of a name for it) will only give you approximate direction.
For some reasons I thought that the center picture on the first post was a set of binoculars :rofl

Those first pics would make a good "Caption this" ehh Mach? :lol

It is Japanese... if I remember correctly, the picture is from a military review of the homeland defenses in Tokyo itself.
Yes, it was prior to Doolittle's Raid as well.
