Title: Defrag won't complete
Post by: Getback on March 29, 2011, 08:24:58 AM
What I fear is a bad hard drive. Any thoughts?

download the latest version of auslogistics disk defrag, there is an advanced feature for defrag and optimize, if that fails...find a hard drive testing utility and have it do a full sector scan...i like spinrite but it costs money.

Also run a disk check, just in case its fragments holding it open (and stopping defrag from working).

Sounds like a hd to me, but always worth checking.

Wurzel (and yeah, that auslogistics defrag is great, much quicker than the windows variety, and some useful features)

Turn off screen savers and ANY processes that run when you defrag. Any HD access during the defrag causes it to reset and start over. It has to go back and defrag and reanalyze all those new temp files being made.

It's very much a "start it then don't touch it" process. I suggest doing it overnight as you sleep.

I like to defrag in safe mode. That way pretty much nothing is running but defrag that might cause it to stop.

YMMV

I think this problem was abandoned back when Windows XP came out.  I remember Windows 98 did it to me all the flipping time... I hated it.  Took hours to defrag...
