This would add to realism because gunners knew the identity of the gun adjacent to them as well allowing communication with said adjacent gun....or tank...etc.
It would go a long way toward preventing an enemy from switching sides and manning the shore battery of a field for the express purpose of denying a base the ability to fire on his CV as it approaches.
I watched a ship roll right up to a base with shore battery clearly having a firing solution yet it sat idle and occupied.
Once the ship had moved far enough laterally and firing solution was gone, the person immediately vacated the gun.
This occupation coincided with a large base taking attempt and I think adding friendly only icons to manned gun positions would both add realism to the sim as well as helping prevent dweebery that detracts from the sim.

I agree. But the post probably should be in the Wishlist.

Not that I disagree with your request, but what difference would it make ... you can't get the guy out of the gun regardless if you know who it is or not.
Also, I was at that same base last night when the CV first attacked the base. I was about the jump into the Shore Bat and I noticed that it was already occupied and WAS firing on the CV and scoring hits. Without you being in the Shore Bat and knowing exactly what the slew on the gun was, you cannot tell with certainty that the person who was in the gun actually had a guns solution on the CV group ... hence he would not be firing all the while you are thinking that he does have a solution.
When the person who was in the gun vacated the position, I immediately jumped in the gun and I can verify that the slew solution was not anywhere near getting hits on the CV.
This would probably be the reason that this request will never see the light of day. One player getting harassed by another under false circumstances.

Knowledge is power. It might stop some unpleasant behavior if it were added.

+1 to this soon to be moved thread!

I was in a tank sitting 3 feet from the shore battery gun.....actually on the fortification sitting right in front of (and below) the barrel of the gun.
I duplicated the barrel position on the gun with my tank when I made my observation that a firing solution was available and confirmed with someone else that the gun was indeed occupied.
I also scored a couple of hits with the tank while this was going on.
I'm not sure when slapshot was there but that ship passed back and forth many times with the gun being occupied and not shooting long before my teammates were hip to the fact that the base was being attacked.
You may not be able to get the person out of the gun physically but them knowing you can identify them helps the situation become self-policing and will reduce dweebery such as this.
The other reason for friendly icons is so guys can call you on voice or text and tell you the position of a nearby enemy or vice versa.
-
i say there should be a form...kinda like one of those agreement to terms of service forms.......that you have to click ok on, before you man a shore battery. it should state that you will fire that gun at the target....... :noid
-
How bout letting the person with the higher rank take over the shore battery kinda like the cv driver. IMO

I was there from the get go. I was one of the first at the base when it was flashing.
You may have thought you duplicated the SB gun position from where you were sitting, but could you really tell what someone sees in the SB reticule. Granted, most of the time, I was dogfighting those coming off the boat, so I couldn't know if the gun wasn't actually firing all the time when the CV was within a guns solution, but I did see it firing and I did see that it got a couple of hits on the CV.
Maybe when it wasn't firing, he might have been AFK or tending to wife ack and when returning, the boat was not hittable. I am not saying the you are totally wrong, but whoever was in the SB, at times, was firing on the CV group.
-
I was the guy firing it early on and scoring hits before the ships moved off to the side............so I left the gun and upped one of the smaller guns at the field.
I scored most of my hits before the base started flashing and a few after because the cv group held fire to delay the base flashing until they had other assets in place.....like the LTVs staged just short of the beach.
Once it was apparent that the ship had turned around and was again hittable, I found the gun occupied and not firing....so I upped a tank and sat at the gun.
After I complained on 200 a few times, whoever was in the gun left and another person was able to access the gun and fired two rounds and said ship was not in range......I'm guessing that was slapshot.
I've only been here at aces high a short time but I've seen this happen plenty of times already.
Adding friendly icons would help reduce instances of this happening.

Absolutely NOT. Rank means nothing and is games too easily. Just look at the numpties that take a CV to the far edge of the map or keep it in front of a SB for their buddies to kill. They have a high rank - probably for this very reason and nothing else.

<<S>> icepac ... I didn't know it was you that was first firing in the gun ... and I guess that is the point your trying to make ... :bolt:
Yes, it was me who jumped in the gun while you were sitting on the SB in a T-34 and the boat was not in slew range.
Anyways, I don't think that your wish will come true. Reason being, for all the times it would help in such situations as you describe, there will be many more situations where the accusers could/would be wrong in their assumptions and I don't believe the HT will give us opportunities to make a wrong assumption and then harass an individual who could be in the complete right.

If you were going to use this to present evidence to HTC, you can already do it by filming.

And ignorance is bliss.

It's always a :noid in the SB not shooting and the other guy could be doing such a better job.
:rofl

I agree. But the post probably should be in the Wishlist.
Many posts in Gen Discussion should be in the Wishlist, all the regular AH posts in here are drowning in demands.
Again, I think the worst thing HTC ever did was credit Lusche with the arena split. Now everyone is clamoring to give their opinion.

LOL ... and most don't know that it was you that was responsible for ENY ... ;)

They did WHAT? :O
I'm confused... I never asked for the arena split, I was very opposed to it and did my share of whining about it over the years and can't remember being blamed for it by anyone :headscratch:
-
My apologies, Lusche, I meant the new Euro hours as related to the off hour arena.
Lusche may have been responsible for the actual split, but I can't say for certain. He was definitely responsible for Chernobyl and the Hindenburg disaster as well. :devil

Sorry, I did not think they were THAT serious with that "NO SMOKING" signs on the Hindenburg :noid
About the offhours thing... it's all okay now. The first 2 months had been horrible. Not only because of the complains, but because suddenly a lot of people thought I had any kind of special standing or secret ties to HTC. I was bombarded with messages "Tell Dale to do xxx" (I have never even spoken to Mr. Addink!) or "It's a nice idea, but you should now also do yyy" and "You should fix zzz...!" :lol

While I wasn't sitting in a SB at the time...

I swear I'm going to add the below picture to every 'suggestion' in the General Discussion.

so is this a suggestion ? shouldnt this be in the wishlist to :D

A: This topic wasn't in the wishlist when I posted it.
B: The picture wasn't meant to be funny. It was meant to illustrate two points...1) how an icon for manned guns would have prevented the harassment I got from those two that thought I was spying in the SB and 2) to show Slap's point about how some get harassed under false circumstances.
It was intended to show my support for this wish because if the SB did have an icon, I wouldn't have received the crap I did on that particular day when some thought I was sitting in the SB and spying for the other side.

have you ever even maned a shore battery? or any other gun? i think i've only ever seen you in 38's and 25's.

On very, very rare occasions I might hop in a manned gun to help out but 99.9% of the time I wouldn't waste my time.

I posted a picture of Andy Rooney, it had nothing to do with your picture. That is what I was commenting about.

I reviewed films of a field in which 4 37mm were occupied (one by me) and I was the only one firing with planes and tanks well within d400.
Sadly, the film does not show names.
I really think that knowing who is manning the guns will go a long way toward removing this type of dweebery.
-
As long as this remains a game and nobody's real life is at jeopardy, there will be people that game the game for their own reasons. It's sad, but just get over it and move on.

yes it does.. they show up as G-S
but I am in favor of icons on the guns anyway.. can't see how it hurts anything.. I sit in 37's alot, and it would be easier for friendlies to see me there than to ask on range "where are you? i dont see you"
-
icepac..if you're taking this this seriously as it seems you are....you need to step back, and take a break. it'll help you enjoy the game more when you're in there.
-
I don't "step back" when there is an easy way to improve the sim.

you realize i didn't mean that in any way 'cept to try to be helpful, right?
it just sounds to me like you're taking things too seriously.........
