was following a killer line of storms over central Florida, where my parents live, and i found this:
http://www.baynews9.com/article/news/2011/march/225911/Sun-n-Fun:-Event-closed-to-public-7-injured-after-tent-collapsed (http://www.baynews9.com/article/news/2011/march/225911/Sun-n-Fun:-Event-closed-to-public-7-injured-after-tent-collapsed)
that's a bummer :(
-
Just watching some of the videos of the storm. Lots of planes damaged or totaled, and lots of exhibitors lost stuff. Fortunately no serious injuries
-
It was intense to say the least.
-
I don't understand why people would keep priceless airplanes in an area as susceptible to high winds and bad weather as Florida.
Didn't Kermit weeks lose some of his collection when a hanger broke during a storm awhile back?

So in your world people can't have small planes in FL? or fly there in small planes? :huh
I think you're being seriously over paranoid. People go to Sun n' Fun from all over North America, it's a big event for aviation buffs to have a good time, and for manufacturers to show off the newest, coolest stuff, basically IT'S FUN. Should we all stop having fun because something bad might happen? Something bad can pretty much happen anytime, anywhere.
Where do you live?
Gulf coast has hurricanes,
East coast has hurricanes,
Northeast has blizzards,
Midwest has tornados,
Mtn west has blizzards, wildfires and earthquakes
West coast has earthquakes, wildfires and landslides
And micro-burst winds of hurricane strength can happen anywhere. If you're that paranoid about disaster striking you could never live or travel anywhere.
This could happen at any big fly in. Heck a tornado could rip through Oshkosh one of these years (God forbid). Does that mean they should stop having the biggest fly in and airshow in the world?
-
I misunderstood. I thought this was a collection of airshow planes based out of Florida.
-
I live in tampa and i haven't seen anything like this since 05' maybe 06' and to think i was going to attend sun n fun...
-
The fark.com headline read something like..... "Classic aircraft arrive at air show just in time for....TORNADO"
Bummer :frown:

Just got back from there. ALot of fun, may go back again tomorrow. Question though... What is this beautiful aircraft and when can I expect it in AH? :headscratch:

Whoa that looks like a cross between a P-47, a Sea Fury, and a T-6.. What the heck?
Pretty awesome though! :aok

It's a T-6 or at least started it's life as one but I've never seen it before. Hard to say what other modifications have been done but it looks reasonably fast in comparison. It took a second but I kinda like it.
-
Here is another look. I like it :aok

from the manufacture database it looks like a custom, privately built and owned. very cool :aok

he did, but he turned that to his advantage....and has a VERY beautiful area now

I'm actually suprised it doesnt have a retractable tail wheel.. The plane looks fast enough for that to come right off at high speed..
-
Look closely at the location of the retractable landing gear and the shape of the vertical tail.
It looks like a highly modified (probably for racing) AT-6.

exactly my thoughts.
you can also notice it by the silhouette of the wings

Looks like it got similar treatment that the yak that became "Mr. Awesome" got.

As a 12 year Sun N Fun voluteer, let me tell you it really sucked. I work on the flightline for ultralights and light planes. We only lost 4 aircraft in our area. This was due to our air ops people getting 21 planes into a hangar between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Surprisingly, the plane owners who didn't want to go to the hangar were the folks with the smallest lightest planes on the field. The stoms rolled a construction trailer that had been converted to a shower house. A full 360 onto a camper. I didn't see the damage in the general aviation area until I got home Sunday afternoon and could look online. The one big thing I can say is that the volunteers at Sun N Fun really pulled together to help aircraft owners and vendors, and put on a great show Friday-Sunday. Crews worked all night to mover damaged planes from the vendor area and get things cleaned up overnight. I have to say, I am very proud to be a part of this group. :salute This was one of those freak storms that we don't see in Florida. In the 12 years I've been there, I have never seen weather like this. We were all happy that there were no major injuries.

This was a Super 6 - basically a highly mod'd T-6.
Yea SnF was pretty horrific this year. Good friend Walt Fricke from Veterans Airlift Command lost his Aircam with less then 30 hours on it.

Try as I may, I can't get turned on by that plane. Its like some anchor women on tv. At first glance you say Whoa!, then after a second you see something that just doesnt look right.
