been a while and I am rusty on my turning and burning.
as a rule of thumb should I be going for corner speed as long as possible by not turning as hard as possible or ride the edge of the stall right before the plane buffets to get the max turn rate?
and further where are all the corner speeds listed if this is so?

Let me know if that doesn't answer your question.

hmm ok bad phraseology.
corner speed often limited by 6g blackout and it bleeds down past to best sustained turn speed is there a quick rule of thumb for bust sustained turn rate speed?
ie somthing times stall speed? A x B = C etc?

2.44 x stall speed = corner velocity. You can get stall speed and corner velocity (where you get max. degrees/sec) from BadBoy's bootstrap calculator and using a totally simple test method (find slowest turning speed a plane sustains on the exact edge of buffet). I don't remember the math that gives you stall speed and corner speed from test data, and I deleted all my AH/aero stuff where I had it broken down.. But that calculator should be enough.

So are you watching your gauges in a fight or just going by feel after practicing turns?

There isn't anything easy that I'm aware of. My general rule for WW2 aircraft is if I can't pull 3 Gs without stalling I'm too slow. Of course you have to break that rule a lot but I find it a useful guide.

You always watch the bandit but you glance at your gauges, the horizon, the ground, and your rear view.
Feel is a popular expression for experience training your automatic skills. In a real aircraft you can actually feel performance but in a PC sim you can only learn the visual and auditory cues.

Hi Citabria, welcome back.

You could try this rule of thumb, aim to enter an engagement at or just above corner speed, too much faster and if you use a one circle opening maneuver you risk a wider turn and letting your opponent get inside for the first shot. Then pull all the way to the edge, initially until the edge of blackout, just keeping enough of a visual window to be able to see the bandit, and then as you reach the buffet boundary ease back so that you ride the stall, and stay there. If you are in a one circle fight, use all your flaps as soon as your speed allows, and if you are in a two circle fight, use your flaps as good energy management and the geometry of the fight dictates.
and further where are all the corner speeds listed if this is so?
Corner speed will vary with your aircraft weight and configuration, you can find the value for any aircraft with the fuel, power and load out of your choice using this utility.

Thanks for the training earlier on this very subject! :rock FLS
I thought this stuff was easy...lol...you gotta be Einstein to get a kill and live in here
I'm leanin more and more to permanent buff pilot, let the young guns fight it out turnin on the deck :D
