Title: Ho-301 Autocannon
Post by: Imowface on April 05, 2011, 01:30:04 AM
I just figured I would post some pictures of the neat cannon and its ammo for veiwing pleasure, for all those who dont know what it is, it it a 40mm Cannon, that shot caseless ammunition (like a small fast rocket sort of thing) it was used on variants of the Ki-44 and Ki-45 IJAAF fighters
First pic, the weapon itself, note on the first half of the barrel the large recoil spring, and in the middle of the gun body, where the bullet is shown, there would be a 10 round magazine there in a instaled aplication
(http://en.valka.cz/files/ho-301_r__e_40_mm.jpg)
now, here is a picture of it installed in the wing, notice that the recoil spring and all other mechanisms are covered by the wing, leaving only a small part of the barrel exposed

here is a diagram of the shell itself, now, at the bottom of the shell the diagram does not say that there are 12 holes in the bottom for the propelent to propell it out of the barrel, which I will post a picture of below
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/84/Ho-301_40_mm_projectile.jpg/300px-Ho-301_40_mm_projectile.jpg)
here is another cutaway of the shell, this time a real picture, and now you can see the holes in the bottom of it like I was saying above

I hope you guys found this write up interesting, and also I am glad if anyone learnt anything new from it, if anyone has any questions about this I will answer them as best I can :salute

about 150m, a very bad gun, but I think it is cool none the less

When you say, "a very bad gun".  Do you mean a bad donut of a gun or it just sucks?

What was the problem with this gun? The russians or the british could produce quite effective gun in the same caliber.

The Ho-301 was recoiless firing caseless ammunition.  The Russian and British guns were traditional automatic cannons.

Exactly what Karnak said, it had the trajectory of a rocket, because that is pretty much what it was shooting

A rocket cannon, I like the sounds of it.

A mounter recoiless rifle mounted on a plane, good idea on paper...not so much in flight.

same idea as the hispanos on the Hurricane IIc, they had the same type of spring mounted on the barrel
