Seems to me it'd be a little more realistic if the clouds would actually give us some cover, if we decided to up through them.
ie, Go up through the clouds and nobody below can see your icon. Ahh, but the table has two sides. We wouldn't be able to see the icons below either.
Sure we'd be able to see the planes/dots, from up there, just not the icons right in your face, when you know the enemy is way down on the deck...

That. I heard a lot "then he escaped to the clouds and disappeared".
Clouds are the biggesr frame rate killers tho.

I was under the impression that the clouds do cover icons...........
-
They do, we just don't have enough of them.

I THINK he's talking about that cloud layer we get at 15-17k. :headscratch: As for the clouds we get under this layer, they seem to hide the icon a little but not completely. I do not get into a lot of fights within the lower clouds very often, so I can't recall myself.

Yes, the ones around 15-17k...

I think there are 3 or 4 types of thickness for the cloud layer. Most map makers choose the default thin one, at the default altitude of 15k +/- 2k. I have not looked at thicker ones. Maybe I'll try a little offline test tonight...

go to the AvA, no enemy icons at all...... and this weeks map has pretty clouds too
-
Thicker layers have less "holes" in them to see the ground. Default opacity is 50%. Changing it to 90% makes it almost impossible to see through. The individual "puffy" clouds have the same opacity settings available.
So your answer is "it depends on how the terrain was built or set up".
-
Why would it matter how the cloud layers are set up? If a cloud separates one plane from another, then no icon. At least dim it down a little. Pretty gamey right now IMHO...

I played with some settings offline. It does dim it down a little, but at the default 50% it doesn't do much. You'd need 70%+ to dim it enough to really notice, but it's still a big neon sign under the baddie. It would be nice if the code could see the cloud in your line of sight and turn off the icon until the cloud is no longer between you and the baddie.
-
That would be nice. I may have jumped the gun by saying turn the icon off, but the cloud should mask it a little. Not just the enemy, friendly's too.

wonder how many people will just change their settings to look thru the clouds. kindda like what they do with gv's or the so called night that some people want.
