Title: Rolling Deck Landing Pretty Intense
Post by: Jebus on April 10, 2011, 02:10:56 PM
This is very unnerving, landing with deck pitching 30 feet, at night, low on fuel.
Turn on your sound and go full screen. Headphones if you have em!!
I guarantee this will definitely hold your attention. The links below are two outstanding videos about F-18 carrier operations aboard the USS Nimitz during weather that causes a severely pitching deck, which you can see in the videos.

:lol That was a great series they did on the carrier.

My Mom's cousin wrote technical manuals, he didn't say what systems, but he did say that the Navy aviators were extremely arrogant and cocky compared to the U.S.A.F. guys.

I guess this is why they can be. Freaking awesome.

 :salute

There isn't audio in those videos.  It is PBS why would a country block something made by PBS?

Whomever uploaded the video blocked it from being viewed outside the U.S. That's the way YouTube works.

Sometimes it's better to study a little bit about a topic before you click the Post button.

Thank you for explaining why bozon couldn't view the video with facts.  :salute  Instead of simply calling me ignorant but not telling me what I was ignorant about.

If it was my only chance to make a carrier landing I'd ride along.

But then I'm old and have little to live for. <G>

How about Germany? we now get Internet here in the third world as well. Who would have believed it?

I know this is how youtube works which is why I hate it with passion. In recent years there is a growing tendency to differentiate internet users by their login location. This is the most stupid idea ever: the whole point of a network is to eliminate the significance of your physical location. Slicing and limiting the connectivity in the internet is meant to preserve the interest of economic dinosaurs that still think DVD region protection, protects something. The have still enough money to buy court rulings to intimidate spineless companies into differentiating internet access by IP.
US web surfers do not notice this because this habit is practiced almost exclusively in the US (and to a very limited degree in the UK), where ridiculous copyright claims are accepted by courts. In the case of youtube US surfers cannot even know that these videos are restricted elsewhere.

Good stuff :aok Liked part 2 - Night Landings. Thought of 200 people smack talking if pilot would make it,
or go around. People grabbing popcorn, etc. Was intense. I could've landed my buffs on it anyway :bolt:

I have boycoted the industry for a good 10 years now. Only follow what I can download free on internet or tv/radio. Luckily the world is full of podcasts and internet radios for free content.

Hmmm, Could someone download to another host in US, and post it for download legally? Idk, is it possible even?

I used to be able to but YouTube has put something in that blocks my ability to download a lot of videos.  I may give this a shot but I'm not hopeful

Edit: nope - Just tried

I got where I got could do night landings in the F-18 via Microsoft Flight X. Even did
the one night mission were you follow your wingman down. Your in stormy conditions
and your navigation system fails. Unless you can follow your wingmans approach you
have to bail out. That got my heart rate up, its pretty intense just in virtual world
much less the real world with no reset button.

One of my favorite quotes:

"The three best things in life are a good landing, a good orgasm, and a good bowel movement. The night carrier landing is one of the few opportunities in life where you get to experience all three at the same time."

<S> To the US Naval Aviator.

Talked with my sister-in-law who was with 41 on that cruise, and I'm pretty sure she was one of the pilots flying that night.  Totally a CF from the beginning to the end.  No one should have been flying....they were out of combat headed to Australia for a liberty port, five months into their hitch, and it's decided they need to stay current?? In s**t like that??  WTF??  The CO of the one squadron (the Shrikes?) even alluded to it while he was being interviewed at the beginning of the first vid, and my hats off to him for taking the place of the cone during the night tanking evolution.  Don't know the guy, but wish I did...helluva leader to do that.

I never made it that far to "enjoy" one of those nights, but even just watching these two vids made my heart race, and palms get sweaty.

I leave you with a joke and a thought:

"There's an F-18 pilot who is emergency bingo and about to line up for his final approach when tower calls and asks him to take it around once.  Now...emergency bingo is a real no sh***er ...if you don't land, you stand a good chance of floating in the silk.  So the pilot asks Tower basically WTF, and the response?  They have a B-52 on long final for an emergency approach with an engine out.  Being the stellar Naval Aviator that he is...his reply.  Roger tower...will take it around, would hate having to deal with the dreaded 7 engine approach."

And finally....

"Flare to land......squat to pee" :t
