Title: Plane Perks
Post by: Pyro on May 18, 2000, 01:55:00 PM
Just to clear up a few things about this upcoming system.

It is not meant to be something that only elite pilots can get.  That's not the point at all.  If you fly like you do now, you will eventually accumulate enough points to get a perk plane.  Most planes you will be able to fly all you want, so it's not like you'll end up gettting stuck with lousy planes if you don't have any points.

This system does a few things for us.  First it allows us to introduce planes that we otherwise would not be able to include because they would upset play balance.  It also helps balance out plane selection and brings more diversity since people can get more points by flying less capable planes.  Last, it gives players a tangible reward for their efforts.

You do not need to be a top pilot or fly mega hours each week to achieve a perk.  Flying more will let you achieve it in a shorter amount of real time, but you'll still have to spend the same amount of in-game time.

This is a purely a game system for the main arena.  How a plane gets classified only has to do with how it affects the main arena, not with how it served historically.

This system will also be used in bombers and vehicles.  A B-29 and Tiger II would be examples of what we could add as perks there.

Thanks for clarification pyro.

Now, to something completely different: As a non-english speaker, the exact meaning of the word 'perk' is unclear to me. What does it mean?

Excellent Pyro! Thanks for clearing that up!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) I feel much better about the idea and how you will implement it. <S> Sorry for the misunderstanding.

perk = a bonus or a gift you would not normally have access to.

A bonus, or added benifit.  Something in addition to what you would normally have, thrown on top.

Perk means something special.  A reward for something done. A bonus at work would be a perk or driving a company car as a reward is a perk. that help?

Thanks for the elaboration, Pyro. I still think my idea of an "Uber Lottery" would be a fair way to control the number of uber rides per tour. When the uber rider gets shot down, his killer gets his ride. And so on, and so on. This way, the number of uber rides stays the same, only the owner changes.

What ya think of that idea?

Perk = Something a coffee pot does.

Really though, a perk is an added benefit, sort of a bonus.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Dingy, Geschenk would be a gift.

A perk would rather be Belohnung, like a bone you throw your dog if he was obeying orders  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Will all these perks cost the same, or is there going to be a graduated scale based on, um, perkiness?

Interesting stuff, Pyro.  I'm really hopeful that a system like this will work without unjustly penalizing folks based on flying styles.  From the general overview you gave, it sounds like it might work.  I anxiously await more specifics.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hmm...I wonder if the B-29 will have the atomic loadouts available? I can see it now, a radio transmission to all friendlies giving a ten minute-to-target warning to get out of the area, and then BA-BOOM, A-1 becomes a dusty low hill with radioactive wool drifting down for days.....  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

ok, so I'm dense,,,,,     (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Hmmm.. gonna be interesting to see how this works out...

But I still don't see what's gonna keep the "hot shots" outta the perk planes, while us low end target drone pilots seldom see em...

Whether ya use "points" for kills, or
K;D statistics = point's, or time in game, seems the end result falls to the better pilots any time you use a "limited access" system.

I'm willing to give it a go, (else ya wouldn't have my CC number    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) )

So far ya'all have done quite well in producing a game that'll do quite well by the average weekend flight sim person. I just hope it stays that way...

Gawd u guys crack me up sometimes. I can hear the virtual hand-wringing! "Will my plane be a 'points-only' plane???"

Wonder if the cannon hawg'll be availble fer regular play.. or will it be a 'points plane?' (just curious)

Seems to be a neat system; certainly nothin ta get all worked up over tho. At least, not for me. I doubt I'll be seen in anything other than what I fly now... and I can't fathom a dedicated P51D or B/C driver being tempted away from what he loves to fly and fight in for anything else.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

You LW types can have yer TA-152 and Komet and whatever else they had in dribs and drabs.. I'll be waitin with my pony.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Since you'll earn more points for scoring kills in less capable aircraft, will this lead to BBS threads in which lazs argues vociferously that the F4U was actually a complete dog of a plane and should therefore earn more points per kill than, say a Fw190?

Well,
lets see and judge. But I agree with StSanta: stick with history and not with fantasy. I dont like the old WB system (How a plane gets classified only has to do with how it affects the main arena, not with how it served historically)
And I dont like a/c that saw combat only for 1 or 2 months. If I understand well the Main Arena wont ever have an RPS or a balanced plane set. Too bad.
