now you understand why few people want to help or make a comment.  they just get harassed.  seen 2 threads asking info about systems recommendations, both have gone without answer.  last year they wouldda had people posting at least 3 systems they thought would bee good.  now nobody really makes a suggestion.  last six months or so, you say something and there's 3 or 4 guys who will argue to death about the difference between a blue led fan and a red one, from the same manufacturer.  or questioning the motives behind the recommendation.  It's sad, we lost some really great guys who were always willing to help due to the constant bombardment of arguments.

Your local retailer is always willing to help. Just a hint.

You've hit the nail on the head.  Oh, TilDeath built my machine.  Bought it back in January.  Very nice.  Semp, what you pointed out is, for me, the downside to all this AH stuff.  Was less prevalent prior to 2004.  Oh well.

Do a search for Tildeaths posts. Pretty much the last one he was in was an argument that was people being "nitpicky" about a word and it's use or some other stupid thing. TilDeath said good-bye and thats pretty much it.

Good rule of thumb to remember with regards to led fans

"blue is true and red is dead"

I used to be a regular poster in this forum and thought I helped many players, however, I no longer have the time and since so many took TilDeath's advice as the work of God himself I leave it to him to advise.

TD made a personal choice to leave the boards.  We're worse off without him here for sure, but that's his business.

There's still plenty of useful information here.

Any hardware related questions are usually best served at your local retailer, they will sell you uber boxes with the same kind of enthusiasm like the ex forum member did. And there's nothing wrong with people making a living.

and the best advice I'll get at a local retailer is no where near what I'll get here.

When I Flew with Wings of Terror TD helped me a fair bit with my laptop when it came to sound packs. couldnt do them like your normally owuld on a vista system.

Sound pack is a game related software issue and has nothing to do with building hardware. Those questions are best addressed to 'game sounds' forum.

TD was nothing but helpful, one or two accused him of "steering" people toward his business and as far as i can tell, a "rival" in the business or at least the field, ridiculed most everything he suggested.I've read a buuuunch of his posts and the "worst" i saw was "If you need this, i have one at a more than fair price".He helped my plenty when my comp. was down a couple months ago. Had me call him in the evening to walk thru some things we tried to narrow down my issue.(did you read that?  took time out of his night to help a total stranger.)
Why would he want to come back when all he does is get bashed. And from what Ive read and seen on here. his systems are nothing but class for playing AH.  As for his main "basher" I've yet to read where's he's posted anything of real use to anyone asking for help, but he didn't mind jumping in to attack anything TD suggested or recommended.
He's a loss to the game and to the community.

I remember calling TD once about buying some more memory for my computer.  he looked up my cpu/mobo and advised me on the type of memory I needed that would go with my system.  he also directed me to buy it from newegg because they had a sale going on and I would pay less.  I dont call that steering people to his business.  and when i bought my tempest case from him, he was going on vacation for the weekend but asked me to send him an email and he would call me back and help me with cable management.  he spent an hour while i rerouted, set up my case.  I dont think he made money off me. and  actually he discounted the system to ah members and some other got free hardware.

mrripley I know you know more than most of us but please try to not be so arrogant and either help or stop with the never ending arguments over nothing.  make your point or give your opinion and leave it at that.  no use to keep going on a never ending argument.

TD is a top notch guy.  More than once he's steered me away from throwing money away and getting the issue handled at a reasonable cost if any.  I trust him implicitly and *looks at rig* nobody is going to touch the innards but him.  If, and in my opinion that's a very large if, I have to pay a little more to know my stuff is going to be rocking and rolling when I want it to be I'll be talking to him.

Some of us don't have the interest or the inclination to deal with all the ins and outs of computer building etc.  TD has been an invaluable resource to me on many occasions.  I'm glad that he still trusts me enough to answer my queries and know I'm only trying to figure out a problem for myself not profit from his advice.

The way several members of this community treated him was shameful.

His departure from this community is a loss for many in my opinion.

TD was doing mostly good work but the level of devotion many of you were / are showing towards him is a bit confusing.

I didn't drive him away from here, I simply asked him to correct his obviously flawed claim. In the title and text he compared interfaces by choosing the fastest option on another and one of the slowest options on the other - I called him out on it and for some reason unknown to me he wasn't prepared to correct the title or the text in the thread.

If I was TD I would have said 'ok, my bad, its a comparison between these two very different pieces of hardware, not what the interface can do' but he chose to leave the forum instead.  :headscratch:

He could take 0 critic in his text and he couldn't provide facts to back many of his claims up which were contested by me or other forum members. THAT is why he left folks.

I quit posting because I took issue with this posted in the forum rules at the top of this forum:

15- The discussion of selling and/or trading items is forbidden in all public forums.

If TD was really such a nice guy he'd have given his wealth of knowledge with no expectation of renumeration but as it was, I saw him repeatedly trying to make computer building into some mysterious black hole that only masochists would jump into.  The truth is building a good computer is one of the easiest things you can do in your life.

I have no problem with the actual help he's offered to people who don't care to put forth the effort to learn but I saw him spending the best $15/mo. marketing budget he could have ever dreamed of and everyone getting sucked into it.

Really, I couldn't stand to watch it anymore and just left the forum.  It would be no different than having Dell or anyone else posting and steering people to their business.

Sweet, next time I have an issue that I just can't put my finger on, I'm gonna call Best Buy and ask them to walk me through it.

I wasn't aware that the Geeks would do that for us.  Thanks for the heads up.

You probably have a small independent local retailer there you can support with your needs. Why should you use best buy?

Besides, your hardware and software related questions are most certainly answered also here. How many reasonable questions were left unanswered after TD left? If you were a hardware retailer, tell me, would you jump on any thread where user is listing components for his dream box? Fine. Now ask yourself why was TD so helpful and why you shouldn't get the same kind of 'MAAS marketing as a service' from any local retailer at any given time.

Every retailer I've talked to has always been extremely friendly and helpful with any question relating to stuff I'm planning to buy - and they will even recommend you the components they see fit for your use. Sound familiar?

So asking him to correct false statements and/or provide independent reviews/links as proof was too much to ask and shameful?

You know what, the way you accepted anything he says for a fact is what's shameful. You need to have source criticism especially when you're talking with a salesman. You ask for time he'll try to sell you a wrist w a tch. I'd do the same.

As with anything else, it's easy to do once you've done it a couple of times. I did it once and asked a lot of questions in this forum, and received a lot of answers.

I never had the impression that TD was shilling here. As a player and participant here he was asked to build a number of gaming systems. I only recall one customer who had issues with the end result. It's all water over the dam at this point. It's just a shame that someone trying to lend a helping hand catches grief and has his intentions called into question in the process.

Ok so if I help a few players build boxes and make a few hundred bucks on the side, nobody is ever again allowed to question anything I say no matter how factually wrong it would be?

it wasnt the querying that was the problem, it was the manner in which you did it - relentless nitpicking with no attempt whatsoever at trying to find common ground. from the beginning it read like you had some kind of agenda and were going to just keep at it until you got the desired result. which you did. well done.
