Title: Orange Traffic Cone
Post by: Meatwad on April 16, 2011, 09:56:48 PM

I always wondered about the logic of those on the ramp.  First, orange practically disappears at night.  Second,
if you miss a 100 foot long gleaming white bizjet, why would a little 3 foot orange cone grab your attention?  :D

My old company swore by them.  Because, you know, nothing bad can ever happen to an aircraft surrounded by
traffic cone armor    Except of course, being hit by flying orange traffic cones propelled by jet/propwash  :D

Someone told me about one guy who missed that cone during the preflight and hit it with a wooden prop, he also showed me the prop...

We used very large green cones and there was a lady who flew a Piper Malibu.  She would always leave well before
her planned departure time and never informed anyone that she was leaving.  At least 3 times she pulled the two cones
off her wingtips and left the nose cone in place.  She'd fire up before line service could get to her and run it over with
her prop.  We called her the cone assassin as we picked tiny pieces of vinyl off the ramp  :D

No idea why she always ignored the nose, but eventually we wised up and pulled it a few hours before she was
supposed to leave  :rofl

I thought you had to do an overhaul on the engine if the prop hits something?

The thing that I was talking about, it was a DA20 with a wooden prop. The prop shattered.

Only if there is a sudden stoppage.  The cones were soft enough that it did no damage to the aluminum prop.
Of course you have to wonder about the pilot that could hear that sort of noise coming from the impact and not even
want to stop to figure out what had happened...3 times!

To be fair, I am not sure what criteria the FAA uses to require an engine inspection after a prop strike.  I have seen
lots of gearup landings where it was obvious that one was going to have to be done.  I also saw an instructor who was
so lazy that he taxied off the pavement than back on so he wouldn't have to push his Duchess back.  The prop nicked
the apron when he taxied it back and we heard a loud Briiiiiiiiiiinnnngggg sound as it did.  He attempted to blow it off
so we informed the owner of the incident.

It wasn't so much that we were trying to get him in trouble as concern for the next student who might have trouble
on a future flight.

Don't think so, she saw the ones on the wingtips just fine.  It always puzzled me why she had a blind spot
for the one she could actually hit.  If you move the nose cone to the side, you taxi right past all the others.

That reminds me of something similar

Playing Stunt Race FX, towards the end of the game tehre is the one map with the bridges and cones on them. Run in free mode and you can bouce them off the bridge or make them hit the ever mysterious force field and watch them do crazy things.
