Those blades seem pretty fragile, Doesn't this one fly into hurricanes? :headscratch:

Yeah hurricanes can reach wind speeds up to 200mph. It exceeds well the operating speed of the plane which is.. waitamineet! :bhead

:headscratch: They fly around the eye if i recall.

These two statements seem contradictory.

Nah I used to be all about weather when I was a little kid. Recalling what I used to know is difficult.

So a year to 6 months ago?

Try 8 years on for size mate. :lol

Those blades look to be feathered.

How fast would you think hurricane winds get 'around the eye'? If the plane is going to experience any trouble whatsoever it's going to be from lightning strikes and heavy turbulence.

Overall windspeed doesn't matter because once airborne the plane is part of the moving mass of air. Wind shear and gusts would be of concern, but not '200 mph winds'.

FYI you have to fly through it to get to the eye.

That unit is stationed in St. Croix every Hurricane season.I was a bartender at the hotel they stayed at a few years back. They are a great group of guys doing very important work. :salute

I thought they flew over the storm

If that's the case it would be neat to see a top view of it from the plane.

was gonna post the same thing.

Those new fans are very good. Navy is starting to fit them on their awacs and other prop driven craft. 130's should be getting the retrofit soon.
-
I know that the 130Js have them as standard. Only reason I know that is there was a story in the paper when LRAFB started getting them.

No they arent per say
The above Hurricane Hunter is a C-130J. It uses all new engines (to the c-130 that is) made by Rolls Royce and six bladed props. You will only find the six bladed props on brand new J model, Its not retrofitable to previous models.
The only prop planes the navy have are the P-3C orion, E-2C/D Hawkeye and C-2 Grey hound.
All three uses the T-56 Engine made by Allision.
The P-3 will never recieve new props.
The E-2C hawkeye spins a 4 bladed prop that is different than the P-3's
The E-2D hawkeye spins an all new 8 bladed prop but still uses the T-56 engine. The -2D is still in testing, but is nearly service ready
The C-2 Greyhound which was an E-2 built for COD services will also be recieving this new prop when each aircraft gets their service life extention upgrade.
However the new props found on the E-2/C-2 have been retrofitted to a sole C-130H for testing. If they determine, its worthwhile, the AF said they may retrofit them to newer "classic" models of the C-130. But its not going to be a fleet wide thing.

When my father was stationed at Key West Naval Air Station as a meterologist, he flew in the C-130s. That was in 1970-1971. Not sure what version. I'll have to take a look at the photo album. I think he also mentioned flying in an AWAX as well. Not sure if was on hurricane tracking missions or not.

I have a neighbor who used to fly into the storms. Some wild stories.
