It does work if done correctly. Some music will stimulate alpha waves in the brain. Not enough testing has been done to determine if it is harmful though.

There is a sucker born every minute.

It is widely known that music can be used to induce a person into a trance like state, aboriginal tribal music is such an example of music used in ceremonies to induce such states. However, the claim that it can induce a near narcotic euphoria like that story describes is just as realistic as the "Brown Note" and if those individuals in the story were examined further, it would probably be shown that their mental expectations is what caused their "high" and not the music itself.

I think the episode found the OP's gullible note.

HA! You beat me to it. :aok
Anyone that plays the drums, or has participated in a drum circle can tell you that a trance-like state is possible. Especially after a good hour or so of non-stop drumming.
Claiming that it can mimic the effects of specific narcotics or drugs is a bit silly, at this moment in time. As we understand more of how the human brain works, it may become possible, but I'm not quite sold on it, yet.
-
I played drums for a number of years. The trance-like state that I would get in, would have been a combination of
weed, sometimes a little blow, booze. But I think mainly I was so into the music, concentrating.
The hotties helped hypnotize too :aok

This sounds very reminiscent of the plot line for an episode of the 1980's Outer Limits (at least I think it was Outer Limits).
