Title: Question about Ultralight aircraft
Post by: Gaidin on April 20, 2011, 11:03:14 AM
Anybody here have experience with them?

I have been told that you don't need a PPL to fly them.

How expensive are they to buy/build?  Can you land/takeoff at a local airport (Not big jet terminal, but small rural)?

Anybody have any recommendations on specific ones?

For a part 103 ultralight you don't need to have any license. For a LSA (2 seater) you need a light sport license. I've heard good things about the Challenger ultralights. EAA is a great organization, and I think they sell plans to build them. You can fly in and out of most uncontrolled airports with a hand radio, but without a Transponder you cant go into class C

Is the Light Sport license eaiser/cheaper to get than a PPL?  I am guessing it would be.  I am looking about at kits now.

If you want to build,  one of the best I've seen are the old Mini-Max line.  The company has been bought and sold several times over the years.  You can find them here: http://www.jdtmini-max.com/ (http://www.jdtmini-max.com/)

The type of license you would want to go for would be a sport pilot license. Im taking a course to get my PPL and it is a little on the pricey side
