Since the earlier "Glider" post may get moved, it is a valid request/idea.
C-47s did tow troop, supplies, and vehicle laden wooden gliders in WWII.
If Gooney "formations" were available, one could drop troops or supplies using the .salvo command like we do now. Having "Formations enabled" would be the only thing needed, I think.
Back to the original thought... C-47 Formations Enabled to simulate Gliders. Troops and supplies. Landing would not be an option, air drops only with this configuration.
Other considerations possible:
Not sure how .salvo 10 would work....since with buffs it would drop 30. The ideal would be .salvo 3 then .salvo 1 but that would limit the formation to 2 base captures.
Maybe enter Plane 3 (Ctrl 3) and drop 10? Of course, that would need more code.....
Having a small vehicle in one might be the only hard part. A glider with a sherman or M8...that would be k-kool! :)
It would need to be "released" and do an auto landing, I guess for that..unless they would fit thru the cargo door. :D

This is a good idea, but however we couldn't use it effectiveley.
You see with trees, hills, knolls, and mountains covering almost every square yard of our maps the gliders would be most ineffective due to the fact they had to land to disperse troops/vehicles.
-
HTC has said that if they increased the number of troops that a goon could carry they would increase the number of troops it would take to capture. I'm thinking this might fall under that statement. If you can bring a formation of C47s (30 troops) the capture is going to take 30 troops forcing you to ALWAYS take a formation, AND making it that much harder to capture by getting 30 troops in safely.
Be careful what you wish for!
-
Instead of having a formation of 3 goons, lets do something like this.
When you click the 'formation' button on a goon, you're basically given
a glider to tow. It follows you similar to how a formation would when
gear down (read: right behind you) and perhaps we could attach a rope
or something as well.
When you let it go, it goes to land just as a formation would at a base.
If it's a V-base, it would line up on one of the concrete paths.

It would be interesting to have one player pilot the goon with glider in tow enabled, and a second player be able to join player one with selecting the glider with GV loadout prior to C-47 takeoff. Might have to do it like a mission plan sort of thing. Once the glider is cut free at altitude, then the second player has to land or crash land the glider someplace. If the player survives, then they get to operate the GV they loaded. This could make for some intense battles and add another element for FSO and scenarios. Just a thought...would be neat to know if it could be done. :aok

When i first posted "Gliders" i didn't think it would get such attention or even such good ideas. I hadn't even thought of the ability to carry send vehicles. i think this is a great idea. :aok
+10 drunks :D

you want to up the capture requirement to 30 troops? :headscratch:
-
I believe what he is trying to get across is that when you hit "Formation" you get a glider instead of normal troops. Not that you get 3 goons which is too much work if you ask me
-
1. First, if you land a formation of bombers the drones usually lockup and die and will not take off again. Therefore, landing to capture is not an option. You would "air drop 10 troops" and continue on, orbit, or die. :) A second field might be available for capture another half sector away and the formations would permit multiple captures.
2. It is not intended to raise the number of troops to make a capture.
3. Initially, the drones would act exactly like current drones. Maybe a pilot "could" join and take over the plane an "break" formation to land troops or supplies. Big Maybe. That would require coding that might not be productive/worthwhile. Would be pretty cool - it would need to be deadstick, of course, a glider.
4. Mixing loads would maybe be an option too. Base Supplies, Vehicle Supplies, Troops - all in one formation. (more coding)
5. Lastly, Jeeps and small vehicles, added artillery piece attached :), M3 maybe M8 and the SK version loaded and available for the pielet to "jump" into...."O" to Open the cargo door then (Ctrl + 4) to get into the vehicle, then drive it out. Might also be air-dropped but the code getting a driver inside would still be needed.
Would be cool for all arenas and activities. Maybe one day Normandy might be a Scenario...but that needs a lot of....well, imagination. (and terrain)
Thanks to all for raising questions, and objections. This is not to be a substitute to capture a field, but to offer a pilot multiple opportunities. (and other configurations)

I only took the idea to another level. Had your post even remotely been a true wishlist post, I would have responded. As it is, it's likely it will be moved to another Forum. Interesting that you are having the experience and good to hear about it!
Thanks for sharing.

I suppose you could have a single towed glider as an option for the C47 instead of troops or supplies, but you'd still only have 10 troops, with max speed of 150mph. I dont know who would take it over a normal C47.
or
have 10 troops in each (20 total), and require the glider to have a pilot (ie. someone would have to .join the C47, the gunner position being the glider seat). taking off without a glider pilot would destroy both the glider and the goon.
but again you have max speed of 150mph. wouldnt see much use because the alternative is to take 2x C47s which can fly at 220mph, and split up to avoid detection.
seems like a lot of coding for something which really wouldnt be used.
edit: you keep saying drones. didnt they only tow 1 glider each?
-
I say "drones" to save special coding. If "formations" were enabled..that would be the only code needed. Since it exists for bombers, it would likely be a mere flip of a switch-so to speak- for the option to be there in the Hanger.
It would then add 2 goons like a bomber formation. They would run and do what drones do now. If one is shot down, you would bail..like in a bomber and fly on. Cost-3 lives like bombers.
All the other stuff is just 'wishful' thinking-addon ideas. Maybe carrying 3 different loads...might be an early initial option too. Troops, veh and base supps. Even that would need special code.
We have to start somewhere and build on the idea. HTC will make it die if not worthy.

now I'm confused, thought this was about towed gliders not formations of C47s :headscratch:
in which case, a definite no to C47 formations. if one guy can carry 30 troops in a formation of goons, then the capture requirement will have to be 30 troops. which means 30 troops in LVT2s, M3s and SdKs. which none of them could do.
-
Alright just to get this out of the way I'm 100% +1 for this BUT I see some things that need to be worked out.
1. I think the glider should carry 10 troops or 1 vehicle
2. The only airborne tank of WWII was the M-22 Locust (that we don't have)
3. The when you detach the glider you should be put in it's seat and the goon goes auto pilot and flys back to base
4. And when the Glider land you should have to hit "o" to open glider then use the jump plane comand already in game to jump into the tank
Just how I think it would work and could be used in curraghs system exept for the M-22 witch should be added with the glider so basically I'm saying
+1 Glider
+1 M-22

Anytime i can brag about something totally awesome i'll take the oppurtunity :D
Thank you for building such a good idea out of it though :rock

Sorry, it is about towing Gliders...but for sake and ease of starting it without a lot of development, start with 1 or 2 more C-47s. The other thoughts did move away...sorry for the confusion.

Refine the idea further
Make it a team/mission effort. 1 goon, 1 glider, 2 pilots. then either auto troops or players for vehices
1 flying the goon. the other the glider. goon driver controls flight of both until glider is released at which point the second pilot controls the glider. similar to an air spawn.
Pilot of the glider has to make it down safely at which point the drunks can be let out or the player/s can drive the vehicle/s out of the glider.
Haveta be light vehicles though. Jeeps or M-16, at the heaviest.
Maybe some light artillery similar to what now defends the bases
