Just watched an account of passengers sitting on tarmac and wow. The control tower at Lambert reported tornado passing through airport last night. Extensive damage at the airport and the neighborhoods surrounding it. No loss of life reported at least at this point. I am about 70 miles SW and it touched down a few miles from here first. Broke into 2 storms and the Northern one grew very large and that one hit STL.

I live smack dab in the middle of Tornado ally, but have never seen one running on the ground.  Hope I never do.  My grandad had both of his legs broke by one when he was kid in 1918.  He said while he was in the hospital with his broke legs, he seen his first airplane fly by.

Yeah, strange year.  We had 20-40 inches of snow this year in a week!  we usualy get 8" per year.  Then the wind blew hard for a month.  Now the storms.

Yeah, you guys in NE OK really got it with the snow and ice this year. It was tough to get around down here then I would turn on the news and see you guys and figured it's not so bad. We are in for it again today through Wednesday it seems. You do have a weather radio correct?? :D

I was out at my mom's in St. Peters last night when the tornado touched down in New Melle. That was a bit to our southwest, but close enough to send us to the basement.

Lately the weather in this area has been unusually tornadic this year. I kept a very close eye on that cell that went through st. louis but its track took it a little to the ENE so it went north of here. There was another cell with rotation that had its path right at us but a county away it went from ENE to NE and lost its rotation in the direction change. That cell collided with another which sent it off course. Tuesday night we had enough straight line wind damage and a small tornado to the east of town so im definately done with this weather.

Here are a couple of links to the local radio station that shows the damage from Apr 19th

Sounds like the tornado that hit the airport made it as far as Granite City, IL before it lifted for good.  Another 6 miles or so and it could have been over my house . . .  :uhoh

A storm earlier in the day dropped 3/4 inch hail in my yard.  Word is it was an inch and a half a two miles north of here.  And to Meatwad's point, this came just a few days after we had tornadoes and damaging winds just to the north and south of here.

Glad I installed that portable HAARP device on my roof last summer.

I'm going chasing with a company called Silver Lining Storm Tours May 16-26. I hope it keeps up so we see some but at the same time I feel bad for everyone who is affected by the storms.

Cross your fingers and hope it lays down a nice wedge in the middle of nowhere!

I'm off those days too, got room for more?!?! :D

It was, luckily, north of us, but we saw some of the damage the next day on our way to hockey practice. Wow, from what we saw it was pretty bad. Just glad there were no fatalities.

I'm in the STL area.  That storm touched down a tornado about 20 miles west of my house.. then that storm passed over my house and spawned more tornadoes 20 miles east of my house.  I was extremely lucky in that no tornadoes happened right near me, and that the hail missed my neighborhood completely.

An ex-boss of mine just moved from near the airport to a few blocks from me just a month ago, and his old house was one of the ones destroyed.  Talk about timing!  Luckily its new occupants were not home at the time!

It was a pretty freaky storm but it's definitely nothing unusual around here.  We see about a dozen tornadoes each year that do significant damage.  Just a few months ago we had two in the STL area that took out a commercial district area in Sunset Hills (just south) and a residential area in Rock Hill (just west).

The most amazing thing is that this time around no one was seriously injured.. or killed!  That's ALWAYS good news!  People around here take it pretty serious when the tornado sirens go off...

You get kind of a ho hum attitude after being near so many and growing up with them. But this one was on the ground for 22 miles and was 1/2 mile wide! Very rare they stay on the ground that long.

I grew up in the Bridgeton area and worked at the airport for 10 years. My Grandmothers old house is about 4 streets over from the hardest hit area in Bridgeton. This is one of the older neighborhoods in St. Louis county and very densely populated. I am absolutely amazed no one was killed or even that many serious injuries!
