wire is best...unless you can't run it where you need to.

first and foremost, connection reliability...then there is connection speed, wired is going to be faster all the way around unless you're using very old 10base-t.

With wireless there is also the problem of connection loss for no apparent reason.

Read many reports about that on the net.

And also experienced it when I bought a D-LInk DIR-655 router.

We have 2 PC's, both wired to the router. Was using wireless for the Palm and PSP.

After installing that router, started having connection loss for no apparent reason. Tried many suggestions I found on the net with no success. Maybe because I live in a densely populated area with too many devices trying to connect to my wireless network. I don't know for sure.

Finnaly, decided to disable wirelless in the router and voila!  No more connection losses.

Will activate wireless only when I need to connect the Palm or the PSP.

My 50 cents.

Take care!  :salute

I have an inspiron vista crap box and it goes like this:  Wired: no disco.  Wireless: good run of  hours with no problem followed by disco disco disco disco disco disco (you get the idea.)  No rhyme or reason.

Vista is always going to be a problem.  Just FYI.

Wired will always work better than wireless.  Always.

I agree.  If you have the option to run a wire to your computer, then by all means do so!

I'll admit, I flew for a couple of years with a wireless connection and almost never discoed, but also my router was only maybe 10 feet from my computer (but separated by a wall of which I couldn't drill through due to being in an apartment).  However, after moving into this house due to a lack of network cables I used a wireless connection from my computer to a router about 20 feet away and I got discoed all of the time.  I relocated the router onto my desk and use a wire now with no issues, but my g/f's computer is on the other side of the room and she gets disconnected all of the time... having to reload pages, etc.  I'm anal about running wires across the room so eventually I'll get around to running one through the basement for her, but it's not that big of a deal.  All she does is web browsing.

Anyway, I suspect there's a lot of interference around here.  We have some 'good ole' boys' in the neighborhood and I see a lot of large CB antennas and a neighbor down the street has a HAM Radio callsign license plate, so that may have a lot to do with it.

But this just proves Skuzzy's point.  With wireless, anything goes.  And of course there's always the possibility of hacking (but a good encryption setup will deter virtually all chances of that) but still:

Wired:
-More secure
-Less prone to interference... MUCH less prone.
-Easier to setup
-Faster and more stable speeds
-No chance of your computer connecting to the wrong router

Wireless:
-More convenient
-ummm... that's it.

Also, if you ever have connection issues the second you mention "Wireless" to us everyone will blame it on that, regardless if that is the issue or not!   :bolt:
