Title: Wicked Sky
Post by: Killer91 on April 23, 2011, 01:33:56 PM
Last night we had a storm go up a couple of counties west of me. We never got a drop of rain from it, but the anvil blew almost right over the top of me. Some of you know what that means... MAMMATUS CLOUDS!!!!! The storm never came withing 30 miles of me but the anvil was full of lightning so I got quite a show right over the top of me! Unfortunately I never did get a shot of lightning, but the clouds more than made up for it!!!

I have a huge passion for weather. While I'm certainly not an expert I do know more than the average person  :aok

Thanks!! I saw a picture taken by one of the storm spotters near gainsville of a pretty nice wall cloud. I was at work though or I would have been there!!

Were you out chasing?

Trying too. Had the girlfriend with me and she really doesn't care for it. She thought the wall cloud was cool but was not up for more after that. I had a bit of a close call last May so she thinks I'm a moron.

"The name mammatus, derived from the Latin mamma (meaning "udder" or "breast"), refers to a resemblance between the characteristic shape of these clouds and the breast of a woman." -wiki

I agree!! I think they are some of the most amazing clouds second only to lenticular clouds.

Mammatus clouds.....I've seen em twice here in Michigan.

I gotta admit that was only the second time I've seen them myself. The first time was at least 10 years ago, probably more lol
