Title: Uncertain future
Post by: Bannor on April 25, 2011, 10:42:38 PM
Greetings my FSO friends! It really tears me up to say this. I'm not sure how much longer I will be here. You either like the changes to the MA or you don't, and I fall into the latter. Yes, before I get jumped, I am whining about it. I was very much at home with the gvs as they were but not now. I really enjoy FSO and have for years but with the other changes I'm not sure I can justify spending my money for 3 nights a month. I have had some awesome experiences in here and have met some great people both in and outside the game. I have been c/o of FATE Squad for the past few years and I count them as my friends without a doubt. I don't take this decision lightly. I know that hitech is only trying to improve the game experience but lately I have had more than my fair share of frustration. I have been here for over 10 years and perhaps I am unable to adapt. I will do one more tour in FSO before I make up my mind completely. My thanks to the Administrators and ALL of the squads who have participated over the years. As for FATE, well, it's a wait and see. :salute

If you have to break it down to a time-to-price ratio, perhaps you are right and need to find fun elsewhere.
However....
Who says 3 nights a month isn't worth $15? That's $5 a sitting.
Really? I'm putting 25-30 dollars in gas in the tank every WEEK at bare minimum just to get to work and back. As long as I can afford a "tiny" $15 I'm fine with paying it, regardless of MA dissatisfaction.
The question you have to ask is: Am I doing this to pout about MA inequities? or: Am I just too low on cash?
If the former, go find your joy elsewhere. There's something for everybody. If the latter, good luck; times are hard; see you in "2 weeks."

You have been around long enough to qualify as one of "those old guys". Trust me, I've been there, long ago :D
The Wagon Wheel manufacturers were pretty well bent out of shape when the rubber tire was made, and the wagon wheel users were upset because they had to change, but things do evolve for a reason. My mustang won't run well on wooden wheels and I'm just flat out ok that the wagon wheel industry faded away. It'll be fine. Remember, way back when, we were flying around in cartoon planes that were state of the art and high tech as could be, we were even proud we had full color, both black and white! Then, those darned 256 color games came out and it was just too hard on the eyes. Well we got used to it. Then, good grief that was just almost too much when the 3D element arrived and we couldn't count the 24 pixels that made up the wing and they really started going nuts.
You will adapt, if you want to. If not, you won't. But just don't forget that HTC designs the game for those who want to be here, not those who want to leave. The game has to evolve, and sometimes that means old things have to be scrapped to lay the groundwork for an entirely new direction. At one point, the start of a design reaches the best it can be and it cannot be improved upon any longer, it must start new and evolve to the next level. The game is going to evolve, some will continue, some won't, and new players will come along, old players will stay and some will leave. It is what it is. But, this isn't just a game you adapt to, it's an environment you belong to.
Will you toss out your favorite bar if they change the bar stools that you found comfortable for the past 10 years but the legs keep falling off? Move to a new house if the old recliner just didn't hold up anymore and it was time to get a new one? Even if the new one had the handle on the left side instead of the right?
This is a home, feel free to go to another game and try and start building the camaraderie you have built here in the past few years. Guess what? You are going to have to learn a new interface anyway. Aren't you? What are you leaving? The people you have met over the years because you have to learn a new way of playing, when leaving means you play something else, lose the friends and still have to learn a new way of playing?
Silly? Ya, but that's just my opinion and it would be a shame to see you leave, but if you do that's just the way it goes.

Bannor game burnout is a reality no matter what game you play. I took a break and did 6 months hard labour in ww2ol.
Take a break, don't feel guilty about it. Take that break and those silly things that nag you right now will be forgotten in time. Sometimes there's too many trees to enjoy the view of the forest ;)

Greetings.
Krusty, I did use this forum to express my discontent with the latest and greatest updates. Only because this is where I speak with the community I care about. To be perfectly honest though, I have agonized over this decision for several months and not because of the evolution of the game. I have no problems with hitech trying to make it better. However it was the straw that broke the Sopwith Camels back, as it were. The money has little to do with it as I have been here in leaner times. Burnout is part of it, but I have other reasons that are my own and have nothing to do with the game, the people, or those who run it. The hardest part is leaving the squad. Its not like I cannot or will not stay in contact with those folks as I do count them as my friends.
Thanks Roc. Like I said, they gotta keep it fresh. Although, lol, having the same little map up in both arenas for a week gets a bit stale!
Vulcan, I do feel a little guilty for my squaddies. I would hate to see the squad pull out of FSO as we have been in here for 10 years. I have had some of the most fun I have ever had in following, planning and leading not just FATE, but as CiC. Our numbers are a little low of late so that does concern me, but regardless they will be fine. I never say never on a return someday. Life is the journey. FATE is what you make it.
Tuk, you rock! :rock :aok
My real intent here was to say thanks to all I have flown with over the years and not to criticize hitech. I rarely complain here on the boards and really have always tried to be positive, constructive and respectful to all who fly and post in here. I got on my little box, yes, but I really agonized over saying goodbye and I just threw that in there as one of the reasons, but not THE reason. Just a cheap shot, but no offense intended. Also, perhaps if this is my last tour, the CiC will see us into a preferred ride? :pray
Anyhoo, in the end it's a life change not a show stopper. See ya'll in 2 weeks.
Peace,
Rich (Bannor) Harrison

Bannor, I hope you didn't take offense at my post. I was being sincere. If you're not happy, find the happiness elsewhere. Good luck! There are plenty of virtual fish in the virtual Interwebs. :)

Well I don't want to see you go. :) I appreciate you posting in the community you care about.
Not much to add, but to point out that a Starbucks coffee is about the same you would pay for 2 hour evening in FSO with your squadies. And that is if you ONLY flew in FSO the usual 3 a month.

$5 for a 2 hr night = $2.50/ hr I remember pumping $2.50 in quarters in video games in an hr easy when I was my daughter's age. Best part to me is I can play from the comfort of my home. Either way, good luck.

I am taking a break for a while. Been playing for 6 years and just started losing interest a 2 months ago. Have not played for a month and the only thing I really miss is the friends I made in the game. Although, I still have the BBS that I can still chat to you guys. :salute

I can see where your coming from, I played another game and even did different behind the scenes work and online work for them when they were shut down I came to Aces High in the Beta Days stayed for about 2 yrs or 3 yrs before I took and 8 yr break and came back to the game full time again, Yes burnout can happen real fast in these games and getting used to new changes also takes time to getting used to. Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck in your new adventures and the Community would miss a fine Pilot like yourself.

Bannor:
Say it isnt so!!!! Would like to see you stay and clear my 6 from time to time goodness knows I need it :D But if you must go I wish you all the best. Just in case i would contact skuzzy and get your name removed from the availability list. In my mind you paid enough through the years for that. And besides you might come back..... And I would hate to see some 7 year old using your call sign with a squeaky voice.
And for you my friend the solid gold dancing banana's
