Title: Folding wings for carrier planes
Post by: vafiii on April 27, 2011, 05:29:36 PM
How ' bout folding wings for the Corsair, Hellcat and any other carrier based plane which had folding wings? When beginning a sortie on the carrier deck, the wings must first be unfolded and locked into place before taking off. And to take it one step further have the plane rise up from the hangar deck on an elevator with wings folded. Talk about cool!

+1 for folded wings, but I would like to have them unfolded and ready to go
when I launch off a carrier. Otherwise it'd be great for photo ops and scenarios !

:rofl  as coolio as it would be...can't agree with it...when a cv group is under attack, the amount of time it would take to come up on the elevator, drop the wings then take off...it would be similar to digging a 2 foot deep trench with a teaspoon...a lot of work for nothing useful.

Or have it automatically lower your plane to hangar deck and land it (tower you) if you put it correctly on the elevator.

It would be nice Eye Candy to see some on the deck if theres room..but  Idont wanna wait for it to unfold my wings when i want to take off. Good thought though.

+2 For folding wings.

However, there are some slight problems.
1. All carrier planes except maybe a couple are updated to current standards (moving parts in cockpit) so it would be a while until we see it.
2. Would have to be an option, like have it under the auto takeoff. If you have auto takeoff selected, you spawn with wings unfolded, and with it off, you start with wings folded.

Still a complete fan for it anyways.

As an afterthought, I wish the 'floating plane syndrome' was fixed first.
Yes, I know it's due to lag, but seeing planes floating 300m behind or
in front of a carrier really bugs me.

Pay for a T1 line to everyone's house, problem solved.

No use for it at all.

Agreed, no use for it. If we are going to have it added than we need to add the whole preflight which would take you on average a half hour.

No use for animated cockpits either then. It's for immersion and eye candy, much like the graphic updates on the planes. I think it would look great and would be a great add on. Everything shouldn't be just gameplay, folks like the little things too.

What do you mean by "animated cockpits"?
If you are referring the the gauges, than those are useful throughout the flight.

Rudder pedals, throttle, 'joystick', flap switch (ie:spitfire), seeing your ailerons roll,
your rudder move, your elevators move.

Heck, we don't need our wheels to move yet they do. Some planes you can't even
see the flaps when they're deployed, yet we have that.

Though I don't always agree with 'pig', he's got a point. It's all about the eye-candy,
immersion factor, and fun.

Right

Movement of those controls are a part of normal AH operations. Folding and unfolding the wings would be a part of the preflight, until we start all our sorties in the hangar and spend half hour checking all systems on the aircraft we don't need to be folding our wings.

There's also a reason why naval aircraft started to have folding wings: To fit more in the hangar.

So until our CVs have limited storage space there's no purpose for them.

Additionally, only some aircraft (IE, Corsair) had wings that automatically deployed. Many had to be unfolded by the deck crew, which we ALSO don't have.

We don't have field crew yet the planes rearm.

We don't have field crew yet the planes rearm.

You don't see them rearm - the ords just appear ready to go, like magic. The same way your wings unfold and your engine is started.

There is zero need in this game to depict any part of the preflight, including folding/unfolding wings. Animated cockpit is different, that's something happening while you're flying. And making CV planes slower to up than land planes would be a step backwards.

That's why I didn't ask for preflight animations.  If I had I would've pointed out that you've got a handful of seconds where nothing happens anyway while the engine spins up.

Nobody's talking about pre-flight routines. It would take mere seconds for the wings to unfold. If the carrier is under attack then it's under attack. So what? As for the elevators bringing your plane up from the hangar deck, make it an option. If you don't want to start from the hangar deck below then you can start with you plane parked on the flight deck, wings folded!

We used to have a slider in the options, that controlled how fast movement happened between tower and hangar, etc.

As you spawn. They should unfold. It could be quicker than R/L. So that they unfold as you get your engine to turn over.. I rember an older game I played having something like that. Basically eyecandy. You could not do it manually. It just happened as you spawn in.
