Title: BOOMERANG!
Post by: Avanti on April 30, 2011, 09:47:14 PM
Once again I really think this need to be added, It fills the gap before the Americans joined the fight against the Japanesse
nearly all sources I have say that the Boomerang had great manoeuvrability at low levels
and you can't really argue with 2x20mm hispano's and 4x .303's can you?

A plane so slow it never shot down a Japanese plane. A plane so obsolete it was instantly relegated to strafing troops on the ground, and using little tiny smoke bombs for the corsairs orbiting with it, so the corsairs would actually bomb the targets.

If the SEARCH button were functioning I'd chide you for not checking about this topic before posting it. Since the button isn't working I'll just state: This has been oft requested for almost a decade now. IMO it has no real place in the game. Mostly it's requested out of national pride because it was made in Australia, however the design was taken from a US plane (or was it British?) and only slightly modified.

American.  T-6 Texan was the base as I recall.

Quite right.  Upon further review, the Boomerang was developed from the CAC Wirraway, and armed trainer.

I believe the Wirraway was developed from the T6

So what.? Its an aircraft that meets the criteria and it fills out the a/c from other countries. Do we needs lots of work first on other stuff? yes. would it be a fun plane for SECs or a short hop to shoot up m3s? sure.
I hope that any and all a/c that fought in ww2 get a place in this game. (after a while of course)  :D

You read some BS  in here ...............

It was produced at a time when neither Britain nor the US showed willingness to provide Australia with aircraft for defence.  This was right at the start of the Pacific war, Australia's Army, Airforce and Navy were pretty much all in Europe leaving nobody at home to fight and nothing to fight with.  There was not a single fighter aircraft available.  The production of a fighter had been part of a longer term plan of industry development but nothing tangible had come through.

As it had to be manufactured from nothing, almost overnight, as many "off the shelf" components were used as were available.  CAC were already making the Wirraway advanced trainer (which did shoot down a Zero btw and was the primary defender of Rabaul) so they saved time by using what was already in the parts bin.  It had commonality in a number of parts, but not much else with existing aircraft.  For example, it used the same engine as the Wildcat but that hardly qualifies it as a "modification" of the F4F.  It was a fresh design.  It was a credit to Wackett and David.  It flew, it fought.

A "handy" fighter resulted, but one which had no supercharger and thus no high level performance.  This was rectified in the later marks but few of those were produced.

Entreaties to Washington paid off (backed up by Macarthur and especially Kenney)  and a useful number US aircraft started to flow south.  Churchill wasn't happy about that btw and Australia historically realigned to a pro-US stance and has stood there ever since. Britain also came to the party providing initially Spit 5s and eventually new-build Spit 8s.  Boomerangs simply couldn't match the speed and height of Japanese bombers hitting Darwin but were used for local defence at forward fields like Millingimbi and Horn Island.

Contracts allowing CAC to manufacture the P-51 locally eventually pushed it off the assembly line but its replacement was kept under development until the end of the war "just in case".  This was the CA-15 which remained a continually updated paper project until the war finished at which time a single copy was built.

The nakedness Australia felt so keenly in late 1941 led to the insistence by succeeding Governments to maintain the ability to manufacture fighter aircraft here since that time.  This policy is only now under scrutiny and review - 70 years later.

CAC have manufactured under licence such types as: P51 Mustang, Avon Sabre, Mirage 3 and F/A-18.

The Boomerang is a unique fighter...

its the only Combat Fighter designed, built and used in frontline service. By the Commonwealth Country of Australia.

I know of the Wirraray, but the Boomerang was better.

And we added the Brewster... and a new Zero.... slow aircraft that cannot hold firm against most LW rides.. and yet.. they have a devoted following and are some of the most feared in Furballs. The boomerang is an agile low level fighter.. and with some altitude and a good pilot, could well be VERY dangerous.

Plus.. it looks a TONNE OF FUN!

Well I beg to differ sir, both those a/c can be more than a match for anyone who doesn't watch themselves.  :t

not raggin on ya just stating a fact. (mostly cause I love my little barrel with wings and I have to defend it)  :D
