Title: Flying Heritage Collection Welcomes a New Bird
Post by: Brazin on May 02, 2011, 04:47:24 PM
I haven't been around here in ages but some of you may remember me as Hobo back in the old, old, OLD Warbirds days and the early AH days.  Anyway, a little news from close to home caught my attention today and I thought I'd share with you all.  FW190 joins the Flying Heritage Collection at Paine Field in Everett, WA.  If you live anywhere close you owe it to yourself to check out this museum and then stop by on one of the flight days when they pull out 4 or 5 birds and actually fly them for a half an hour or so.  Amazing stuff!

I would love to read some of the thoughts of the people that flew it after restoration.

Thanks for posting Hobo <S>

Good luck on that.  Apparently the 109E that the Russel Group owns in Canada is for sale.  Probably looking at 10 Mil for it :)

Beautiful yellow nosed Emil though.

Nothing wrong with the dream.  I've had it for the last 40 years :)

Might want to talk to Bodhi, he's at least got a T-6 and has worked on many a warbird.

He's selling/sold his T-6.   Ask him about what a fart in a radio compartment can do.    :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

A bit farfetched, I know. I'm not a fan of E model 109's, if I were to want any 109 model it would have to be a G or F series.

Interestingly enough that will probably cost you more.  The later model 109s flying are actually converted Spanish 109s that have been fitted with DB engines.

There are two 109Es flying and two more on the way.  All have actual wartime provenence although it's safe to say there is an awful lot of new metal and parts in them.

This guy's website has all the surviving Axis aircraft listed and photos of many of them.  The 109 survivors are listed here:

Save those pennies and go after one of em!

The stuff my daydreams are made of. I was convinced I would win the Powerball and buy those two SU-27s. Hasn't panned out yet. :(

Depends on the day for me in terms of which warbird would be first on my list :)

Since it's just dreaming anyway, I like variety.  for the most part my list includes, but not in any order, again it depends on the day:

Spitfire XII (only bits of EN224 left but it is being restored)
P51B/C
P38F/G/H
B25C/D
Beaufighter (The Fighter Collection bird being the closest to flying)
Me109E (Not picky, Paul Allens, The Russell Group bird or either of the two being restored would be fine)
B17B (yeah I like the early versions of most birds)
P39/63 (one of each)

I think i could have fun with those :)

I'm always in a go-fast mood. Number one on the big lotto win dream list would be an F-14 for me. I just can't get her out of my head. I took the gf to see Top Gun at the theater last night so I'm just on Tomcat overload today :D My F-16 driver buddy says I would just be a big fat target for him but I'm pretty sure I can just pull the Maverick brake manuver and dispatch his little Viper without issue. :rock

As far as WW2 I would have to get a Pony painted up like the one you made for me then get my 38L and a Ki-84. Are we hijacking too much, do we need an O'Club daydreamer thread Dan?

The Mig is ok but not the prettiest at all. Hell, that ugly old 190 is better looking.

I believe this is the 190.It looks great in this footage as a piece of crash history, almost a shame that it was restored imho. :old:

Been watching this 190, she's a true beut, The FHC has a good facebook page and gives regular updates, they were particularly buzzworthy as they were finishing the final steps of painting this 190 and taking it up for its most recent first flight.

The FHC just installed two restored MG17 cowl guns to this bird today (or earlier this week), story and pics just posted and shared via their facebook page just a couple hours ago.

Hope this pic works for you all, if not let me know and I'll repost it so you can:

Cowl Guns

Recently, FHC staff have been installing a pair of MG17 machine guns in the upper cowl of the Fw 190 A-5. The two 7.92 mm guns fire through the plane’s propeller using an interrupter gear to keep bullets from striking the whirling blades. Soon, we’ll start on the 20 mm cannon in the wings.

Good news: it's not the only operational BMW radial engine left in the world that is leaking the oil.
Bad news: it's the oil cooler.

Guess it's true, glass radiators.

I thought radial engines were air-cooled?

Hopefully they fix it very quick

You're mostly correct and they originaly were in the prototype 190As.  However, during the designing phase, they found the tight-fitting aero-dynamic cowl covering the engine restricted the eair flow it needed to adequatley cool.  Test pilots described it as flying with your feet in a fireplace as the engine was mounted directly infront of the cockpit.  The first production 190As eventualy had some space added between the firewall/cockpit and the engine where it mounted, the entire cowl enlarged a bit more to allow more airflow over the engine, as well as an intercooling fan added just aft the propeller within the narrow front opening of the cowl that "rammed" additional air over the engine and an oil-cooler.  It didn't take long for field mechanics to develop their own unique solutions to help with the cooling of the engine during operation, the most aplicable of which were then incorporated by Focke Wulf into their later 190A production craft, such as the A-5 and A-8 we have in the game (and I believe the A-3 that the FHC has, will have to verify it's model).
