Yup.
Arrive at least an hour before.
You still needed to get your TSA massage.

I'm assuming you were at a small airfield in Alaska, right? When I fly out of Little Rock I normally get there 2 hours in advance, 1.5 hours minimum. At a smaller airfield I'd imagine security and crowds are a lot less hassle. Even with the scheduled time being a little off, getting there 30 minutes before departure time seems a bit late. Get there earlier so you can :airplane: and not :bhead
-
If your an hour early, it only takes 15 minutes, but if you only have 15 minutes, it's going to take an hour. :x

they were talking about boarding time. Flight at 7:45 boarding at 7:30. If you are not there by boarding time your sit is gone. Then again, they do tell you to be there 1.5 hours in advance and they do have remote check in over the internet (most airlines). On top of that, you know how airlines are and yet, you show up 20 minutes before boarding time and wonder why you did not fly :lol
Not sure if you could make it in 20 minutes. In Chicago you wouldn't. In any case, your sit was given to a stand by customer that bother getting there earlier.

There's an old saying that goes along those lines that I was tryign to remember and get across, thanks and quoted for truth! :D

Lol if you aren't checked in by boarding time you aren't flying. No one's fault but your own.

As a person thats travels 80% of the time, I can tell you a couple of things, some are common knowledge or sense:
1: Most airline in the US require check in 30min or more before departure. (Mostly because of baggage movements, I think)
2: Check in online 24hrs ahead of time.
3: Pay for baggage online and save time and money.
4: Know ahead of time that you WILL have to take your shoes, belt, hat, hoodie, and coat off prior to screening. (So dress light)
5: Laptops must come out of any unapprove TSA case.
6: Check your liquids.
7: Know the difference between "boarding time" and "departure times".
8: Check any baggage that you do not require on the plane.
9. Mondays and Fridays between 6am-9am are perk times for airports.
10. Do not tick off the lady behind the counter.
Most of these tips have save my 30-45min for any air travel of the course of the year.

Coming from a family of commercial pilots and flight attendants, we have some horror stories from the airport. I guess its the the price of flying for free. :)

You don't hate airports you hate being a passenger on an airliner, and that I can understand.
-
I understand the OP thought he was doing the right thing, and it's unfortunate he came here to vent and will likely get berated for it.
One could argue that perhaps you've been playing AH too long, got too used to arriving at an airport in the control tower instantly and then boariding your aircraft instantly with a single click of a button, and the luxury of automatic take-off and engine-start... but no, you like many many of us mere mortals that have come before you have learned what you now know in much the same manner (the hard way) - you gotta wake-up and show up ret!@#edly-early for your flights in this country.
-
I always eat some taco bell about 3 hours before I fly, so I can unleash biological warfare on anyone who is an ultra melon. I crop-dusted the TSA guys who gave me a full-body massage, and then told them I hope it was as good for them as it was for me.
I hate flying commercial

My brother just came back from a honeymoon where they both went to visit friends serving in the Peace Core in Bulgaria, they flew on one non-american airliner the whole trip (a German airline, can't remember the exact name), on the way back from Bulgaria to Frankfurt, they loved it with the friendly and knowledgable stewarts and on-schedule flight time, and in particular their excelent and generous selection of beers from Germany to enjoy while on the flight.

That does sound good!
I just remembered that my favourite airport ever is the one on Chios, in Greece. It consists of a grand total of two buildings (IIRC), a parking area for your planes, and a runway. It's just small, simple and to the point: no security, single luggage conveyor, no jetways, no gates, no taxiways. Simplicity can be so wonderful at times. :)

In comparison, twice the price gets you half the size with beers served in-flight here in the States, and it's for the priviledge of only being served one of our most noble and world-leading brands such as Miller Light or Budweiser Light (*puke*).

airlines website stated 30 minutes before departure.
i was at ticket counter 30 minutes before departure
i did not get anything confused
boarding was at 730 depart was 745
plane left the ground at 730
plane left 15 minutes early
i dont fly much but i do know to check in online. I did and my seat was still given away. did not know you can pay for bags online.
came to my office and check the flight finder thing and it showed the plane leaving the airport at 730.
the time on my ticket still says flight leaves at 745 boards at 730
yes i know not to piss of the counter lady but i aint had no coffee yet
-
Which airline was this Kilz?
-
Kils,
Explain something to me. How can you be in Alaska and still not be a GA pilot? How do you function?

Actually you said you got in line 30 mins before departure and got to the counter 7 mins after that. So if you needed to checkin by 7.15 as per the original ticket statement (30 mins before 7.45) in that area alone you failed. Getting in line at the right time does not equal being at the counter at the right time.

If you continue to show at the counter 30 minutes before departure, you are going to continue to miss your flight(s) in the future. Remember 9/11 and all the security changes that WE All have to endure? That's just the way it is. There's a choice to get to the airport early, deal with the all the frustrating garbage, and fly, or..........not. :headscratch:
-
starting to think i shouldn't fly
851.00 for 2 hours and 30 minute flight
not saying pilots don't deserve good pay but damn that's a lot of money
yes yes yes i understand show up earlier i plan on it.
after contacting a supervisor with the air line they apologised for the whole thing. they did state we should be there 45 minutes to an hour early. 30 minutes was minimum.
i guess what i been trying to get at is, we pay a lot of money to fly, maybe it could have been handled a little different.
i mean if i was to treat my customers like that i would be out of a business. just a frustrating morning is all <S> my banter is done no i didn't expect the AH Community to agree but i knew i would get different in-sites on it tho
-
Nowadays I fly commercial all the time (once a week).............
#1 Who the F is the "teller?" You mean TSA on the security line? Or the ticket agent?
GET TO THE AIRPORT 2 HOURS BEFORE, just like the airline told you to do.
You should probably hate yourself for being an ignorant American. That "teller" if she worked for the airline was just following the KNOWN RULE for the last 20 years...... After 9/11 it went up from 1.5 hours, to 2 hours.
-
BullChit!!!!!!! And I bet my life on it!
airlines website stated 30 minutes before departure.
What you read, WRONG, was that your bags have to be checked at least 30 minutes prior to departure, and some airports are 45 minutes.
-
Kilz I'm sure most of the folks here don't understand the difference between hopping into their larger airport and a smaller rural Alaska airport however I'm sure you'll do better in the future. There's no reason to cut it that tight and despite your surprise you really shouldn't have been.
Also the pilot pay didn't make your flight cost $851.

Anyone else ever make it to their seat from the ticket counter in less than 23-minutes in the last ten-years?...
at philly.......i don't get my tickets at the counter. i get them online, and print them. i get to the airport generally 1.5 hours early(the rapid rover service insists on this).
it takes me about 15 minutes from getting out of the rapid rover to clear security, and walk to the gate...then i nap for about 45 minutes.

Sure but I usually side step the lines after flashing my airport badge when at one of the public aviation terminals at KSLC. But usually I stay over on the general aviation side. :neener:

So if someone was to get an airport badge, I could get through security, and not get groped?

Flying is not a right, it is a privilege.
Back in olden times, before I can almost remember, people dressed up to fly. No flip flops. No sweat pants.
No wonder things have changed.

Maybe at a GA terminal....at the commercial airliner terminal, the airport badge might get you a discount at Starbucks. Avoid security and the groping? That ain't gonna happen.

Kils,
Explain something to me. How can you be in Alaska and still not be a GA pilot? How do you function?
Flying costs money, and lots of it.
Alaskans, for the most part, do not have these sums of money to own (or rent)
a bush plane, not to mention the training costs involved with flying. <-- one
Alaskan's opinion, at least.
This is why we ride polar bears. Cheap, easy to maintain, and relatively warm.

Along time ago a very young airman (17 years old ) was on the check in desk at RAF Bize norton , this was back when any batteries were not allowed on the aircraft ,up steps a very butch USAF Captain , she looked like a pissed of Arny , i asked her if she had any equipment that had batteries and if so could she remove them , without blikning she pulled out the biggest love torpedo ( can u say dildo ???? ) i have ever seen(havent seen many since i might add !!!!) , you couldve sunk the Bismark with the thing , twisted the cap dropped the batteries on the counter got her boarding card and left ...... beetroot was the best way to describe my colour ..... :O
Passengers are a complete nightmare :)

My guess is this a case of confusion (there is no way the plane left 15 minutes early just because) or another one of those "Toyota is out to screw people by repo-ing their cars for no reason BS"

no bro it left 15 minutes early the answer i got to that is all planes can leave up to 30 minutes early.
but its all good
and yes most dont understand our airports
TSA takes a whole 5 minutes to get thru
once thru that 3-4 gates and they are right there in front of you so it takes 30 seconds to walk to a gate. sorry folks we dont have big airports in Alaska
my state capital has a smaller airport than me

Ever been to Ted Stevens International?
Just saying, it's not necessarily 'big', but it's certainly bigger than most small airports here.
-
My guess is that when you didn't check in 30 minutes before departure they gave your seats away to standby passengers (or last minute purchasers). By the time you finally moseyed on up to the counter, there were simply no seats to give you. Since the plane was full and if everyone was on board and accounted for, then they could leave as early as they want. Maybe some bad weather was rolling in and they wanted to beat it? Also the time printed on your ticket is not guaranteed. Planes can sometimes leave early and many times leave late which is another big reason to get there extra early.
I just got back from a Florida/Bahamas vacation yesterday. Last week we arrived at our tornado damaged St. Louis airport 90 minutes early, and had no issues checking our bags (I *LOVE* Southwest and their free bag checking.. so nice not to keep a carry-on with you everywhere), getting through security, getting a quick snack and hanging out at the gate for a bit before having to board. Then again, St. Louis is one of the better airports to deal with.
As for Fort Lauderdale, by the time we turned in our rental car and got to the terminal yesterday it was only 60 minutes early and they seemed really busy. I was a bit worried but then I noticed that the flight had been pushed back (delayed) for 20 minutes so then we were all good. Actually sailed through TSA both times without a hitch, even after forgetting to take off my watch and setting off the metal detector!
Security on the ship was much more lax, although I did get felt up by a Bahamian Security agent but he was all cool about it, even (jokingly) telling my GF not to be jealous about the physical contact! :lol Coming back I thought it was funny that Customs let me sail right through while a middle-eastern looking family of nine (with four small children and three young teens) was being whisked away to their examination room, although their ignorance of the English language might have had something to do with that.
While I'm on the subject, I though it was funny that while taxiing for takeoff in FL a small child was just SCREAMING his face off. I thought it was an infant until I head "I don't like airplanes, I don't like airplanes" and he jumped up. The kid must have been about four years old. Anyway, thankfully shortly after takeoff he finally quieted down and it ended up being a pleasant flight. After getting off the plane and going towards the baggage claim, I heard a man say "Say bye-bye to the airplanes!" and I looked back to see that same exact kid start screaming once again and crying "I don't wanna leave! I don't wanna leave!" :lol Kids crack me up!! (although my GF wasn't pleased)
-
Not flaming you Killz, it's a thorn in all our paws, flying is a serious commitment and chore these days that we all have to adhere to if we want to get on our flight.

i agree i think i got gray hair from this ordeal. and its not from my 4 daughters lol
i showed up an Hour early this time checked in went outside to smoke a cig and what did i hear at 5 till 7 checkin for flight 55 (my flight) is now closed. WOW talking to folks on the plane they said this flight never leaves at 745 as stated it always leaves at 730 :( they should change the time then lol

I bet at 6am the TSA line is 20 minutes long, like a normal airport though. :D
I was recently at LIH and for a terminal with 12 gates, it took a while... It was rush-hour for that particular airport. :uhoh

TSA takes a whole 5 minutes to get thru
Now that is a RichardNixon thing... And the ticket agent should have told you too before they let you walk away........ :headscratch: I'd almost think you could file a suit for the emotional distress. :old:

Fortunately I haven't flown since 9/11 and have never been groped by the TSA. I'd imagine arriving an hour ahead of boarding would be cutting it close. Back in the day I've cut it so close they had to reopen the cabin door to let me in.
-
Don't believe everything you hear. I have only seen one person get groped so far. I spend about 8-12 hours a week at the airport. It hasn't happened to me once.
But the well endowed woman who was groped.... Oh what a lucky TSA lesbo that was. :D

Haha, no matter how much I don;t like the TSA and their stupid procedures only in place to employ some people and produce a false sense of security, I have to admit that even when the "computer randomly selects me" all the time for the extra treatment, it has never been more that a minute or two of extra time and they have always been very friendly about it. No one has ever touched me in 20 years.
