Title: wiper blades won't stop sweeping
Post by: Stalwart on May 16, 2011, 08:49:33 AM
<whine>

I've got a really wonderful 1997 Chevy Venture van, the kind with a long wheel base and two sliding doors.  I love it  :o, but it's got s few problems:

- one break light out
- no A/C (in Texas mind you)
- only one working electric window (passenger door)
- no power steering

Now, the wiper blades won't shut off.  It's been over a week since the last rain.  I've thought about cutting the wires with garden sheers, but only in fleeting moments of frustration.  This is driving me crazy, and embarrassing everyone in the family.  :bhead

Pull the fuse out, put back in when it rains

That's a good suggestion.  Tried that, but couldn't find a fuse in the box that stopped em.

I was also looking to see if maybe a burnt fuse would e'splain the friggin windows.

Perhaps taking it to a car electrician could help to fix the problem? Your wiper switch may be worn down to the point of failure or you have a short somewhere. Considering you have multiple electric failures already my guess is that your wiring insulation has deteriorated and you have short circuits or completely broken wires in the car.

A missing ground link can cause some funky stuff, basically if a device doesn't get grounded the natural way it may get grounded through relay control wiring etc. which may cause them to burn or at minimum, activate devices which have nothing to do with the said device. Typical example of such problem is tail lights that flash like fireworks instead of just blinking the turning signal light. I've seen cases where turning on the drive lights activated the wipers etc. :)

My parents had to dump the 4wd astro van they absolutely loved because the electricity just started a life of its own. One moment running like a champ, then the engine just died. Tow to garage, fix, repeat after a while.

Venture headlights have a design flaw as well.  GM found a way around a recall on them.  :rofl

Edit:  the tail light doesn't work because the circuit board went on it.

For the wiper problem ( temp fix) just open the hood and disconnect it from the wiper motor, then if its raining just reconnect it. It sounds like you have multiple wiring problems, if it was me i would be using a test light and probe some wires looking for shorts, start with the brake light that wont light up and trace the wires back, there could be a broken wire along the way. Sometimes when there wired for a trailer plugin the wires come loose or break where its wired into the rear wiring harness of the Vehicle.

The most likely the problem for your windows is the Master control switch on the drivers door ( controls all the windows, Anti child locks rear windows/doors) or again another short/broken wire, do the switches on each door work or are they dead to?   Power steering is either Belt is to loose/missing?, low fluid, or bad PS pump, as for your AC just use the 255 type AC, Open 2 windows at 55mph  :D

Open 2 windows at 55mph  :D

That would probably work great if both windows went down.   ;)

If the Venture wiper transmission is anything like the Cobalt/Saturn transmissions, once you remove them, it is junk..

Light it on fire and claim it to your insurance company saying it was a short in the wiring...   :devil

NO! Dont do that. The squirrels will give you away... :noid

Google. An amazing tool

I've found the "how to" answers for several problems simply by doing a search for the problem

I'd call them up and ask for the electronic answering system.  Press 1 after it asks you if you are Al Bandy  :rofl

No it's sunny here :)   Most of the rain likes to split and go north and south of us a few miles out and then reconverge  on the east of us. :P
But yes your right that BBQ/smoker I'm building is calling to me lol.
