In your Opinion, who is the greatest Guitarist on earth?
I Know there is a lot, but most classic rock listeners like myself cant deny his skillz:

Kinda like Eddie "invented tapping", even though Brian May did it a year on "It's Late" from News Of The World. :rofl Eddie is good, but not "great". I'd put about 25 guitarists ahead of Eddie and could give you reasons why.

jerry cantrell.

Pretty sure Buckethead will go down as one of the greats of all time.
I first caught him on a tower records listening station in 1992 when I was seeking out Bill Laswell material (praxis) and he's graduated from a technical shredder to someone who can improvise with more feel than most any other guitarist I have seen.
His solos take you on a journey similar to Gilmour's long pink floyd solos or Jimmy Page's epic led zeppelin solos.
He was sidelined with an injury for a year but he's back putting out tons of new material per year.
Half of his tour dates are with an iPod as backing band but he gets out with a full band pretty often as well.
This video starts with a bit of shakey camera work with questionable audio but the camera guy gets his footing, adjusts the audio, and pulls off an epic filming of awesome quality.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsjYqm-2PDk
Though he's known for his complex and fast playing, he's equally adept at sparse playing with simple but effective melodies.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwXlzy9k7jI
A lot of people can't get past the bucket and mask but this guy is pulling off an amazing "in character" persona that allows him to achieve stardom on his own terms without a lot of the negative things that go with being famous.
Once the bucket comes off, he can melt into the crowd....as well as any six foot five guy can.
Gibson also released a signature series Les Paul for him in a 27 inch scale but I believe he tunes it near standard tuning.

I did want to mention that, if I had a band, I would want Steven Stevens as the guitarist regardless of how awesome Buckethead is.
Here's his take on Van Halen's early tone for a pickup company.

So many good guitarists around but these have impressed me probably the most:
David Gilmour:

Brian May:

Both Gilmour and Brian may contribute some great playing on Paul Rodger's "Muddy Water Blues" album that also features jason bonham, trevor rabin, brian setzer, steve miller, jeff beck, slash, neal schon, gary moore, and richie sambora.
Buddy Guy adds an acoustic song for good measure.
Amazing blues album.

This guy did hammerons, tapeloops and most of the early electronic effects.
Arrogant as he is,he's still my alltime fav. I saw him in 74 with David Cross on violin and Buford on drums.... :O
2 months later I saw Floyd, they'd just released darkside and while Gilmore is great you cant compare, its a different take on the instrument,Eddie is pretty good but Roth just spoiled the whole group IMHO.
Chet Atkins and a host of blues players all deserve to be mentioned as well!

I think Joe Bonamassa should at least be in the conversation of great blues/rock guitarists currently active and recording.

If we're expanding the list to include past and present then I've always been impressed with Rory Gallagher.
First time I heard this song, my sales manager was in town for a big event we were throwing at one of our branches we all arrived early, around 7:00am to get set up and he pulls me inside and we go into the demo room and we listened to this song on a pair of Martin Logan electrostats with the volume on the receiver buried at 11 and I was blown away.

The fact that the average G3 concert (satriani, vai + special guest) contains no less than 4 Hendrix songs tells me that picking Hendrix is an almost guarantee to be correct.
What people overlook is that Jimi was far more than just a guitarist as his vocal phrasing and lyricism was nothing short of genius.
Funny thing about Ralph Macchio is that he probably influenced nearly as many kids to pick up the guitar as the greats.
-
Jimi is a given. By the thread title I took it as "Greatest alive".
-
Thing is, there is no specific set of guidelines. If you want raw ability to play, then it has to be EVH, Vai, and Satriani. If you want pioneering sounds, then Hendrix, Paige, and EVH. If you want the music writing ability then Gilmour, Paige, Rothery (of Marillion), EVH (yes, again), and Clapton.
There are many great guitar players. But if you want an all inclusive list, I believe EVH is at the top. Who has done what he has all across the board?
-
Yngwie J Malmsteen
Joe Satriani
Tony Macalpine
Eric Johnson
-
That was great! Ty for the link.
Np! I figured that if I can ever learn this on the guitar, I could die that day and say that I've full-filled my life completely and not have any regrets. :rock :lol

Over the years I have owned:
(qty=1) bootleg tape cassette copy of 5150
(qty=3) legal tape cassette copies of 5150
(qty=1) legal CDROM copy of 5150 (the only music CDROM I have ever bought)
I think Eddie is probably the greatest, but he is also one the biggest prettythang##les and needs to cut back on the caffeine.

You guys are clueless...I am truly the greatest guitarist alive. My talent just hasn't been discovered yet
-
I don't know about the greatest ever. There are so many.
I've probably spent the most time listening to Alex Lifeson.
Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughn are favorites too.
I can tell you who's music I'm exploring lately: Paul Gilbert :rock
But my number one favorite current track is a YouTube smooth jazz cover of Paul Gilbert's "Technical Difficulties"

Ewan Dobson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXqPYte8tvc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXqPYte8tvc) My dad was in a band in high school and he said he could never play this good.
-
I've always been partial to Joe Satriani. Ironically, I went to High School with a guy named Eric Johnson, who was also a pretty talented guitar player. Not the same guy though...
-
Apparently when asked what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world, Jimi Hendrix replied "I don't know, why don't you ask Rory Gallagher?"
http://youtu.be/62aK7Sy8ajg
And of course there is the legendary Frank Marino. His version of Johnny B Goode makes Van Halens "Eruption" look like childs play.
Eddie Van Who???? http://youtu.be/kZzhQXG7OfY
And I've always enjoyed listening to Nuno Bettencourt on Extremes "Pornographiti" album. Guy is incredible.
-
Almost forgot about this kid.

And this old geeezer.

Yes Jeff Beck should be on the list
along with Zakk Wylde, Neil Schon, Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Jack White, Frank Hannon, the Edge, Brad Paisley and a whole boat load of others
James Patrick Page did a heck of alot more than just Led Zepplin....... he did studio fill in playing all through the 60's which included even some stuff in the first James Bond "GoldFinger" 60's movie release, he was in the yardbirds and several other bands long before Zepplin came along. he even had a guy build him the first ever distortion pedal and some other gadgets before any other guitarist had even thought of them
look for the Documentary called "It Might Get Loud" featuring Jimmy Page, the Edge & Jack White
they all are my favourites ( the different guitarists, no matter if it is BlueGrass, Country, Rock, Alternative, Metal, Blues, etc..... )

As I read over the list again and again, I see people throwing names into the hat without thinking much of what they are doing or who they are bringing to light. Guys like Hendrix was a pioneer, he wasn't all that good of a player in comparison to some of the speed demons. Guys like Clapton can play, but their best attributes are the song writing talents. Angus Young??? He has incredible stage presence, he isnt known to be a pioneer, song writer, or speed demon. Dont get me wrong, each and every guitar persona mentioned in this thread can play, write, and perform among the best in the world, just identify what makes your choice "the best" in your opinion. ;)
my 2 cents

is this a thread about great guitar musicians or about "Speed Demon Thrashers".......
after many interviews by Ozzy to find a replacement for Randy Rhodes, all Zakk wylde did was walk in for his audition and he struck only "1" chord on the Axe, and Ozzy siad that was all he needed to see, he found his new Lead Guitarist
Zakk can play anything from Blugrass/Gospel to Country to Southern Rock to Heavy Metal to Thrash........ listen to some old Black Label Society or Zakk's Pride & Glory Album.......
Neil Schon who originally played with Santana is actually better than Carlos Santana.... if you ever listen to anything with Carlos Sanatana playing in it you can distinctly pick him out, he has only one style......
Angus Young is an OK guitar musician, but he is limited........
Ace Frehley would be much higher on the list than Angus Young would or EVH.......
no one mentioned Gary Moore did they?
this is a never ending discussion/debate which will never have a true winner.............. SRV, Jimi, Page, Richards, all those old blues players like Walker, Johnson, Waters, King etc.........
oh...... and definitely "Prince" his interpetation of "As My Guitar Gently Wheeps" by Harrison at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was off the charts

For me, Rory Gallagher (who I was lucky to see 3 times in the seventies)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uUN9PBA4vQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uUN9PBA4vQ)
and Gary Moore, both no longer with us now.
Also BB King, I love his economical style

Van Halen really should stick to studio playing. Live he is just a challenge to try and comprehend if what he is doing makes any musical sense. He has always played that way, especially once he gets warmed up. Its like WTF is he playing?
Best guitarist imo? Too many to even attempt to count.

Most of you probably never heard of the Del Castillo brothers. Mark and Rick are among the best of the current generation.... Better if you enjoy Tex-Mex Latin rock. Don't know these guys... Five pages and no one mentions Dave Evans, English born of Welsh parents and the greatest Irish guitarist of his generation;
Then there's Hendrix and of course Phil Lynott.
Of course I'm biased being Irish and all but Hendrix isn't Irish. But even the most unbiaseed has to think the 'Edge' is one of the best.
