"bass solo, take one".

Another vote for James Jamerson.
If you ever get the chance, rent "standing in the shadows of MoTown" to see just how good jamerson was.
That said, Jaco Pastorius was a monster and Pino Palladino does an amazing job on the studio version of "give blood" by Pete Townsend.
Of course, this 1 minute clip shows buckethed knows his way around a bass pretty well.

How about a 1 handed bass player?

Geddy Lee. Maybe not the "absolute best" but he deserves a top ranking.

Cliff Burton hands down

Im old school.
My all time favorite bassist is Chris Squire. Back in 1991 I purchased a Rickenbacker 4001CS Chris Squire limited Edition Signature Series Bass Guitar because I was so enamored with his music. The bass was no. 242 out of a production run of 1000 instruments. To this day it is still the greatest bass guitar I have ever played.
Squire is my fav not so much for technical playing (when he was younger he was beyond phenomenal technically) but because of his melodic composition and unique sound. Listen to the entire album "Close to the Edge" and you will understand.
Other favs: Entwhistle, Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee, P. McCartney, S. Clark, V. Wooten
There are so many great bassists today. In fact I have developed a grip with these some of these guys that play these 5, 6, ,8 , 10 string basses because I have a hard time identifying the music they are creating as bass lines. Its more like virtuoso soloing. Great playing, fantastic sounds....its just not bass playing to me, but I am coming to grips with it :old:

Derek Smalls is the undisputed "Greatest Bassist Ever". :rock

Les Claypool.
Primus SUCKS.

Paul McCartney singlehandedly changed the way the bass guitar was looked at in rock music. He plays it both as a rhythm and lead instrument at the same time. He's so good and melodic that you don't even notice what he's doing.
Listen to the bass line of "Something".

He had just gotten his Fender bass and was amazed that it held it's intonation all the way up the neck. His Hofner was mostly out of tune by the third fret.
Here's another good one...

It's funny how in a lot of these songs you don't even notice how sweet the bassline is unless you really listen for it... it just blends in.
Actually, it's not funny, it's how it's supposed to be... but still.
Jack Bruce is another of my favorites, but I love Cream in general.

I read in his Autobiography "Many Years from Now", he played his Rickenbacker on Rain.

Too many to list, but to add another to many already posted, I've always liked Tony Levin's playing.

I wrote Fender but I meant Rik...

I used to think that Cliff was the best until I realized that he was playing his bass like lead guitar.
Claypool is great. Primus sucks. :lol (Can't believe it took 2 pages)
As far as rock bass goes, perhaps it was the little Beatle.
But, if you want to see the best bass player and drummer, look no further.

James Jamerson. His creativity was unmatched. He had no fear and is the father
of modern Bassists.

This guy is a big fan of Squire and also owns a Rickenbacker 4001CS. Here is a vid of Miguel covering "On the Silent wings of Freedom" off the Tormato album - 1978
