Title: "and now for something completely defiant"
Post by: Tinribs on May 22, 2011, 06:21:30 AM
It wasnt very good but for some reason I allways loved this plane, best fighting tactics to circle and lose alt rapidly hmm would be interesting to see what some of the top sticks in game could make of it. :D

Its not comparable to the skua or fulmar at all,you are gonna get ho`d anyway so you may as well give them an excuse for it.Im sure that given the amount of flying hours and lack of death(sudden illness, catastrophic electrical failure allways possible)compared to the real pilots that flew these planes we would find a way to make it reasonably successful.
It could take a while but most of us like a challenge. :uhoh

It served in the Blitz. Also, from the source and another it didn't say anything about forward mounted guns or bomb load. Does anybody else have information on that?  :headscratch:

It had no forward firing guns and as it was a poor performer due to the weight of the turret I'd be very surprised if they ever even considered trying to enable it to carry bombs.  That it was also essentially helpless in daylight operations would have also argued against any attempt to use it to drop bombs.

Other than a little bit of initial success it was a dismal failure in daylight operations and lacked the performance to be effective as a night fighter, though it did have some success there.

That folks were sent into combat in those things was an absolute crime.

to the OP:   :rofl nice title...

now seriously...

maybe historically it had no truly effective role in WWII, but in AH, i can see it being used (however rarely) as a kind of extra tail gun on bomber raids. park it around back, and chill with the bomber stream. tada!!
on the other hand, until the other, more important/effective aircraft/tanks/boats are added to the game, i think it should be kept out.

Wouldn't it be a lot more effective for that player to take an additional formation of bombers?

Defiant wouldn't even be able to keep up with the Ki-67 or Boston Mk III.

Of  course you are all right and as I said from the start it wasnt much good but this is a game and not reality, it would be an interesting plane to fly being that in the main part your best tactics would be a complete opposite of every other fighter in the hanger. :headscratch:

yeah, it would be, but if it were a b-29 only mission, and a bunch of VR pilots didnt have the perks for the 29, they could just up the defiant, and tada.

unfortunately, your last point erases my first (^) point altogether. youre right.

not really I find the Hurricane MkIa very effective against most bombers if you hit the right place.   engines mostly .303 seem to do damage them  just as well as 50cal.

when did the hurri come into this?
Hurri Mk I and Hurri Mk IIA/IIB had the same guns as in the turret, browning .303's. It was a comment on the lethality of the weapon. Also, I remember reading that when it started out, German pilots at first would mistake them as Hurri's and would saddle up on their six to a nasty surprise.

I went down by Lanc guns. But, then again I was going in behind with no strategy. In the end, 4x303s can do something.

erm, the tail guns on the lancaster we have ingame are 2x50cals so 6x50cals with the three drones. A better comparison would be the spitfire mkV, XIII and IX, without using the cannons, and on a target who's going 400mph+ relative to you.

You guys don't even know what you are asking for.

The Defiant would be useless in AH, but....

I have shot down aircraft with just the four .303s on the Spitfire Mk IX, Spitfire Mk VIII and, even closer in behavior due to being in close proximity, the four on the Mosquito.
