Title: Track Ir
Post by: IronDog on May 25, 2011, 09:28:19 AM
Been thinking of giving it a try,but I'm seeing a lot of complaints from people that have them.Is it worth the bucks, and does it give one a definite advantage? After using my thumbs for viewing thru all the years, not sure I could adjust.A few opinions please.

No complaints from me, cant fly without it anymore. :) Is is worth it? Well.. it's very personal question, if you can barely afford it, maybe or maybe not ;) For me it's great.

,and does it give one a definite advantage?

No.
If you are used to it and have set it up properly, there are some minor ones (simply looking around those cockpit frames in German rides, keeping track of enemy in rolling scissors), but not anything that will give you a true edge.

After using my thumbs for viewing thru all the years, not sure I could adjust.A few opinions please.

After years of button thumping, it took me a week to get used to TrackIr. On the other hand, when my TrackIr broke, I found it next to impossible to go back to thumb views even after one week of trying hard.

Folks seem to either love it or hate it.  I cannot bear to fly without it.  It really adds to the "feels like I'm really there" experience.  YMMV

I was a hat switch lover for years...always fought the urge to try TIR...then I picked up a super good deal on a TIR3 with vector expansion here and loved it enough that I asked for the updated version for Christmas. I was given a TIR5 with track clip pro and absolutely love using it. I passed on the TIR3 to a squad mate who is loving it as well.

I did ok on the hat switch.  My SA was not stellar, but it was ok.  I'd been playing flight sims for about a year when I picked up my TIR.  That might account for my liking it, because I hadn't really, really gotten the muscle memory burned into me yet.

Within a couple weeks of switching to TIR took me from being able to keep track of the con to being able to keep track of him and being able to tell with much higher accuracy what he was doing, and it only got better with time.  I find it gives me a much better mental picture of how the enemy and I are moving in 3D.

Just to give you a possible reference if you did this, did you get rudder pedals after playing without them for a while?  I'd say TIR is the same level of improvement in gameplay experience as going from no pedals to pedals.  YMMV, but that's what I found.

I've had several squaddies that didn't care for it.  If you tend toward motion sickness, it can be an issue with TIR.  It's also absolutely critical IMO that you spend the time to get your profile set up the way you like it, and in a way that works for you.  I know some of my squaddies hated the thing until they got it set up right for them.  It's the single most individual setting in the game, IMO.  What works for one guy may not work at all for the next.

Sometimes people just don't like the way it works.  I can't imagine it, but I've known a few people who just couldn't get used to it and preferred the hat switch views.

From what I've seen, the people that try it and like it vastly outnumber the people it didn't work for.

If you won't miss the money too much, I'd say it's worth it.  Mine was worth every penny to me.  Whether it will give you an advantage, I'd say if your SA is marginal with the buttons it may make it better.  It's a tough call though, with it being as individual as it is.

If you wear a headset, I'm also quite fond of the TrackClip Pro.  It just goes on the headset and stays there, as opposed to needing to wear a ballcap all the time.

Wiley.

I have to agree with Wiley on this one.  There is not a magic "Get the kill everytime" button to switch on, but it does add to the ability to track the guy that will shoot you down  :cry  His point of taking the time to tweak the profile is very key to enjoying TrackIR.  When I got mine, I had it about 4 months and turned it on maybe 10 or 15 times because straight out of the box it is a monster to try to perfect your tracking. I was 2 or 3 session away from tossing the whole set up. Then I went to an Aces High convention & great friend helped me understand how & what to tweak. It started out with his profile and then I worked it so I didn't have to turn my head so much. It is now very hard to adjust to NOT having it.
Here is a post I started to get more profiles out there for people to chose from TrackIR Profile post (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,312975.0.html)  I would love if Wiley and anybody else would please post their profiles. I think it would help immensely  :salute

I have TIR5 and like it very much except for one issue that I have tried to tweak on but have not found a solution.  This seems to only happen when I'm in a fight near other a/c (not offline or at a distance from other a/c in the MA).  I'll be tracking someone in a dogfight and the tracker will suddenly flip the view 180 and I have to hit my "center tracker" button which makes me loose sight of the con and need reacquire my view of him.  Many times the result is that I get shot up or die.  Any suggestions as to what may need to be tweaked?

Could be that in the heat of the fight the camera is losing track of your reflector. Use the "tracking" and "heads" views in the TrackIr software and go through all possible movements you might made during a combat. If you have a track clip, it might be hidden to the camera in a certain combination of body position and turned head.

I'm still using the Track IR3 with Vector & Track Clip Pro (USB) and can't live without it.  I won't even play a flight sim if it is not functioning correctly.  Give it lots of time and work on the tweaking the profiles.  You'll either love it or hate it, but for me it is now the gold standard.

Also:

Not sure if this might apply a TrackIR version 5, by my older TRackIR 3 Pro acts up if the reflectors are less than about two or three feet from the IR sending and camera unit.

I love mine since it adds a lot of realism, it did take a little time to get used to it, but wouldn't fly without it now.
