lots of oil

You seen that show Ice Pilots? They still have a C-47 doing cargo trips, coolest thing.
-
those radials spit oil everywhere. Our C-123K has oil on the nose from reversing the props during the engine warmup/runup.
any entire a/c pics?

They use C-46's and DC-6's a lot still in northern Canada.

Is that the closest you could get up to it?

I COULD have gotten closer, but they had 2 sets of orange cones set up to confuse simpletons like myself. After everyone disembarked I gave my customary "I'll trade you 30 minutes in your C47 for an hour in my 172"
As usual, I believe he took it to heart, but politely declined my generous offer. They were offering rides, but they were $50 dollars for a lap around the pattern, and they werent going again until 7 o clock

do you know, is this DC-3 stationed in the plains? i cant remember which state, but there is a group in a plains state that has 2-4 DC-3 that they use to reenact paratrooper drops. Was curious if this was one of theirs...

no, they are their own foundation. The only reason i know about them was because i tracked a N-number down of a DC-3 i had pictures of from florida from a couple of years ago and it was now flying with this group as a c-47.
-
So a good bit of C-47's are still in the air flying then?
-
well ponder this... over 16,000 were made...
there are hundreds still flying commercially

There were over 33,900 BF-109's built and one one is air worthy to this day and even then it was built in Spain. Not to say my facts are right (Cause I used Wiki), I just thought since many of the planes back then were produced in huge numbers there would be more flying still today.
-
the difference is wat use did the 109 have after the war?
out of ther 16,000+ DC-3's built, only some 400 were actually DC-3's (437 is the number stuck in my head), the rest were all built for the military. the majority of them were sold to airlines after the war, so alot survived. In fact they were used well into the 70's.

I didn't take that into Account, but it makes sense.

I was at Andrews air force base last weekend for the air show and I saw a C-47 painted with a T9 i believe. Could be the same one or maybe just a common paint scheme.
-
could be the same, but i sort of doubt it since this one is in texas. we had a W7 at wings over pittsburgh last year.
Did you tour the C-123 (Thunder Pig)?
-
I was in Ethiopia back in 1986 and saw quite a few DC-3's still operating at that time in airline service.
-
I see a DC-3 in the air here every now and again. It's always a beautiful sight and sound.
I think it does cargo mostly, I'm not sure.

I see a few DC-3s every day I look out my office window over looking LAX. There is a cargo carrier that has 3 of them that has them parked on their apron outside of their hangers.
ack-ack
