On a crisp morning of April 19, 1775, 80 Lexington militiamen emerged from Buckman Tavern and stood in ranks on the village common. They were in plain sight (not hiding behind walls) as they faced a force up to 400 British troops.
Lexington militiamen were not train military man. They where farmers, blacksmiths, friends, neighbors, servants and printers, fathers, grandfathers, husbands, brothers, cousins and sons. They where Americans.
And on this day, they stood ground to show of political and military determination. As a single shot of fired, marked the opening of the American Revolutionary war and the beginning of American existence. At days end 3,800 colonials joined to fight off 1,500 British troops. 94 colonial Americans lost their lives that day.
From that day of April 19, 1775 to present day, 1.3 million American lost their lives to protect Americans rights of freedom, liberty and pursuit of happiness. And many more will fall.

A salute to the fallen.

My biggest admiration is for the combat medic and corpsmen braving deadly fire to treat the wounded in the field. And the dustoff jocks and medical pilots that rush the wounded to medical care. The numbers above of the dead would be would be so much larger but for these sometimes forgotten, mostly unarmed heros. :salute

For those who live near or drive through Holliston MA: There are 286 signs lining route 126, route 16, and hollis street. <S> to all of them
To those of you who do not know about this. Holliston MA semiannually puts up signs lining these three roads in their town always for Memorial day and Veterans day. and always new names... These names are of the people who have died in iraq and afghanistan in defense of freedom. They are not all from the US. you will see French soldiers and British and Canadian soldiers' names alongside all of the US casualties. Those current 286 signs are the names of the fallen since Veterans day 2010. <S> to all who have given the ultimate sacrifice. and <S> to all in our armed forces.
