Title: MAAM - Reading, PA
Post by: 1701E on May 29, 2011, 05:07:59 PM
For anyone in the area, just a quick reminder, it's coming up this weekend.  June 3, 4, 5 2011 in Reading PA, MAAM WWII Airshow/event.

With any luck I'll be making the drive up there for it again this year.  I know a few AHers went last year.  Think they mentioned having the B-29 'Fifi' there this year.
As a tip: if it's hot out again this year, bring your own water.  Lines are long and prices are jacked up for the event.

Last weekend I went to the air museum here in Addison, Tx that FiFi is based out of. Since it is airshow season FiFi wasn't home but they still had a few other interesting planes. Got pictures of their Spanish He111 and bf109, a P40N, Dr1, Spad, TBM, FG-4 A, B24A, B25, Spit 8, and a Yak3. (might have been a mig3, I'm real bad with Russian warbirds) Also got to talk to a 92yo WW2 vet who flew hurricanes, spits, then P47's after the US got into the war. He said he was shot down once by friendly fire from a B24 tail gunner, but was able to nurse it back to a friendly airbase and belly land the bird.

Sorry for the hijack, your mention of FiFi sparked my memory.

If memory serves, that B-24A used to fly out of Morristown, NJ as an LB-30 for Continental Can.  A couple of
years ago it underwent a major renovation and the correct engines and B-24A nose were reinstalled on it.  Think it
is the oldest B-24 left, certainly the oldest one flying.

The original B-24A was originally supposed to go to the Brits, but Consolidated asked for the airframe back so
they could convert it to a cargo version as a proof of concept aircraft.  I think it never made it to England, but did fly
some training missions in the southwest.

One of the warbirds rags had a nice article complete with color photos of that bird.  I got interested because one of
my buddies dad did maintenance on it while it was a corporate aircraft.  In fact Jim still has the throat mike in his
office <he's head of maintenance for a large insurance company's flight dept at KMMU>.  He ended up with the magazine
I bought about 5-6 years ago.

That matches up with the story I was told during the guided tour through the B24.  They sell flights on the B24 and the B29. one of the museum volunteers said that aside from being a cheaper ticket, the B24 is more fun to ride in due to the B29's noise and chill dampening insulation, and lack of windows. He said "unless you pay the big bucks to ride in the B29 nose, it is a fairly quiet and boring ride." He also mentioned that both birds are sold out months in advance.

There you go

If you knew Machfly, you would know that he can be found in his Spit 14, ... I swear the man is trying to find a way to power his car via a Merlin or Griffon engine. And dont get me started on the look on his face this year when we met at the Reading Airshow, and he saw the Griffon powered Spitfire there.
I swear before my maker that he got tunnell vision, the spit started to glow brightly and he heard Angels singing  LOL

Be sure to stop by the Blue Grass Valley Bank on your way out of town.

You from Monterey/Blue Grass?  Not really a town many would know about less they live there/know someone that lives there, let alone know of specific places here.
I use the F&C Bank normally anyways. :D

And I though this thread would be about this:

Funny how he's so poor in "Married With Children" but so wealthy in "Modern Family".
