Yeah having better planes than the soviets is a mistake.  Wait I don't get it?  Maybe I misread your post becasue of the spelling errors, which I hear are great for gaining credibility(so is this http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,33.0.html (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,33.0.html) ).  F4s are great planes in fact we still get use out of them now as target drones.

Yes, you know more than everyone involved in the development and implementation of the various versions of the F-4 Phantom. It was used from Viet-Nam to Desert storm, because it had no purpose? What a dufus.  :ahand Now, looking back, we're all geniuses. Of course it had it's short comings & so did every other fighter of it's time. It was and is a very capable bird in certain rolls.   :salute

That being said.  Historically nothing will top the Spitfire XII for me.  P51B and P38F/G/H are tied for second.

Books can be a really good friend to you when researching a particular plane.  The history of the Phantom is well documented as is it's combat career that continues to this day.  They still serve as front line birds in a number of countries.

If something is still in service does not mean it's modern, it means it's still useful & good. It also means that it's replacement is not worth the money.

But in reality, I'd be really happy if I will ever be able to own one of these:

Was talking to a crew Member in the B-29 FiFi of the CAF said he was a engineer on the 29 and the 47.  Once the 47 got to altitude the Sabres couldn't keep up.

the only thing wrong with the phantoms(besides the splitting fuel tank problem) was the early ones, which lacked a gun. the govt. fixed that.

Technically the government <US Navy> broke it in the first place  :D  The original design was supposed to
mount 4 20mm cannon, but the squids decided to go all missile instead.  To give them their due, they stuck to
their no gun policy, even after the E model became available in 1967  :lol

You must be thinking of the E, the Germans used an F that was basically an improved E.

The improvements to the E model included the AN/APQ-120 fire control radar and an internal M-61A1 Vulcan
cannon.  They also improved the fuel tankage and goosed the engines a tad.

I find epic struggles against long odds very appealing, classic underdog. Thus the F4F Wildcat during Guadalcanal days, out numbered and out matched against the Zero and Betty bombers, yet prevailing. Or the Spit during Battle of Britain days. Clearly the Me-109 and Fw-190 series against America daylight raiding during 1943 and 1944.

As for pilots and leaders, my hero is Commander (retired as a Captain) David McCampbell leading CAG-15 off the USS Essex. Highest scoring Navy ace of all time, 34 confirmed kills. In one hop he killed 9 Japanese planes. He flew the venerable F6F Hellcat and made it look easy. I loved his book, McCampbells Heros and his leadership. This was part of the great Naval raids where 200+ Hellcats would decimate a Japanese field or harbor and end all resistence within minutes. I love squad tactics.

Modern day aircraft, you have two types: The F-14D and everything else is target practice. Not the best pure dogfighter but in the hands of a skilled Division (four planes) they would trash anything that flew. Everything else is cheap theatrics.

Gauntlet thrown down...

Boo

B-70 was also the first US military aircraft to have an ejection capsule. When you ejected, very high hopefully, the entire cockpit lifted off the aircraft with the canards attached. It was thought that for long over ocean flights, the survivability of the pilots would be highly improved. The F-lll's incorporated it as well, much to the sad disappointment of many pilots wives & families. My Commander at Mtn Home AFB, Col Coleman  :salute, was permanently paralyzed because the air cushion/floatation bag did not deploy and they hit the ground hard while sitting in their seats. It was found to have had a depot level maintenance error, causing the malfunction. His wife won the law suit. Little compensation. As a rigger at Mtn Home we had little to do with that bird...no drag chute and cockpit ejection chute was vacuum sealed a depot. We supported Air Rescue & Packed transient drag chutes.

At Mt Home AFB I saw a Photo of an Ardvark (F-111) with 5 M-61 Vulcan gun pods mounted. It was of course a photo op only. The ammo guys said it would tear off the mounts to fire them all at once from vibration. When it was first deployed with the Ardvarks, a rear mount broke tipping the barrel up & shot the nose off the bird.

Mig 25 is and was poop for anything except photo-rec, unless it is going against airliners that is.

Mig 21 was a very effective plane. Not because it was so good, it was only decent vs. the western opposition, but it was very cheap and extremely low maintenance. If your plan is to overwhelm the enemy with numbers - make it cheap. As much as I like the 21, it is but a firefly next to a searchlight when compared to the glory of its classic opponent - the Mirage III.

Besides, everyone knows that the coolest man made machine to ever to get off the ground is the de Havilland Mosquito

The horizontal is swept forward too. It has a laminar flow wing - sometimes I like to pretend I'm flying a P51. I only go about 1/2 as fast but I only burn 1/6th the gas so I can't complain much.

Ooops my bad I didn't look closely. Caption said Wild Weasel. The "D" models I worked on had larger radomes with the black paint covering most of the nose because of the large radar fitted during Nam. The pic I chose looked much smaller to me like the E/RF4C
Title: Re: Your Plane
Post by: Rino on November 27, 2012, 11:10:51 AM
Wild Weasel is actually a mission description rather than a plane.  True both E and G model Phantoms flew WW missions, but
the E model carried the nose mounted 20mm and the G carried a radar receiver in place of the gun and alot more SAM warning
antenna.  Sorry to be anal, but my job in the air force was limited to E and G model Phantoms.

Not sure what they call the F-16s that fly SEAD <Suppression of Enemy Air Defences>, but I bet they are called Weasels too.
Kind of like why Hollywood picks handles like Maverick and Iceman instead of Stinkbutt or Petunia  :D

It's always been my favorite plane.  Usually after I take long breaks I use the Pony to get myself back into shape (because it's something I know I can get kills in).  Once I gain my muscle memory and sensitivity on the joystick I start flying the 38 more.

Right, & before F-4E/G they were using F-105 Thuds. I was a rigger, so climbing in the aircraft was rare unless something came loose from the ejection seat pack before take-off. Lots of drag chutes...we called them wild weasels because that was there job, regardless of designation. We didn't call the weasels Phantoms or vice versa. Even in Desert Storm the 4G's were called weasels.... :salute

I saw one of the last 2 seater Thuds come through Moody in 1983.  Thing had the world's biggest sharkmouth on it :)  The pics I found
on Google don't do it justice, had to be about 10 foot long.  Pretty sure it was a G model.

F4s are great planes in fact we still get use out of them now as target drones.
lol Curry, they are a B n Z 'r and a great attack platform...  They look wicked and once they put the cannon in it, they were wicked. But most of all, they were tangible proof that a brick could fly when you bolt enough thrust on it!

Oh yeah, nothing like a Rhino at full grunt!   :aok

Ive seen out Pilots do incredible things with them. Ive seen them do, pre-F15, a vertical, or as near a vertical as you can get without being 100% vertical, burners on right over the freaking base. Waking up every poor schmuck who was working mids. Normally they would pull their stunts at the end of their rotations but once when they got a bunch of complaints about noise and they rattled that air base for a week until they were asked nicely to stop. It was a different era, mess with one Phantom jock and you were messing with them all. And they didnt like being messed with. Back then USAF Leadership was still very much all fighter jocks.

They were mostly all 'nam vets, a few were aces, were at the end of their careers cause they were to old to start with 15s or 16s ; Also, They were tasked with "special delivery" missions into the Soviet Union so they were always one phone call away from big Bada-Boom.

They started with their beloved Phantoms and they ended their careers with them. They loved us Sky Cops cause we protected them like they were our own babies too and we never ratted them out when the 0530 step van reeked of Johnny Walker Red from the night before. They were the last of a breed and they were damn good in a damn fine fighter bomber.

This plane got dad safely home.

They painted the one at the midway museum in the same numbers but I believe this one was claimed by a SAM sometime later as #572 was.

#572 dropped the toilet.

What was the pilot's name again?

That would be either Robin Bacon or Clint Johnson.

I just noticed the plane had no ord so it's probably being flown from the ship to Lemoore right before the ship arrived from a long cruise.

They usually fly the planes off to the land base and helicopter back to the ship for the formal arrival and walk down the gangplank.

The plane on the USS midway museum is painted up with the 577 numbers but it is not the same plane.

The name on that plane is not my dad but another skyraider pilot who also had some well known missions.
