Not to hijack the COMBATSIM.COM thread, I noticed this on that webpage...
They have some reviews of games and some of AH even. Outdated, mind you, but still chock full of memories! How I remember those old hangars!
Pre-release beta shots from 1999:
http://www.combatsim.com/memb123/htm/oct99/ah-pre1.htm
(http://www.combatsim.com/htm/oct99/jpg2/ah-109.jpg)
AH 1.00 release review ca. Feb 2000:
http://www.combatsim.com/memb123/htm/feb00/aces-high.htm
(http://www.combatsim.com/htm/feb00/jpg2/lighting.jpg)
Only 15 craft available at that time:
B-17G
B-26B
Bf-109F-4
Bf-109G-2
Bf-109G-6
Bf-109G-10
C-47A
C.205
F4U-1C
F4U-1D
Fw-190A-8
La-5FN
N1K2-J
P-51D Mustang
Spitfire MK IX
A 1.05 review about a year later:
http://www.combatsim.com/memb123/htm/2001/01/ah105/
29 flyable planes at this time.
In July 2001, a 1.07 patch9 review:
http://www.combatsim.com/memb123/htm/2001/07/aceshi107/
Now the game has 47 vehicles (possibly counting the Gunner option in hangar?)
And their last review was ca. April 2002, with 1.09b:
http://www.combatsim.com/memb123/htm/2002/04/ahigh109b/
(http://www.combatsim.com/img/4/7/1/ah109-c-lg.jpg)
Now they're going to do another article I think, from the other thread. It's about time! Their last was in 2002! So much has changed! I know I've hotlinked a few of their images here, so be sure to repay them by following the links and checking out the reviews. It's a blast from the past and a walk down memory lane.

I like the last bit from the beta review in 1999.
You can download and fly the Aces High beta from HiTechCreations. Total download with the hi res textures is around 5.5 MB.
Come a long way since those days. :)
-
Don't we have over 1GB of custom skins alone, nowadays?

Oh man those where good times...."Total download with the hi res textures is around 5.5 MB. "
not many Planes but Big Fun

I personally missed the beta. I didn't have a graphics card. I was on an e-machine or cyrix or some cut-rate deal back then with integrated Intel graphics. It barely ran 2D games. I kept following the game, though, and I got a better system in I think 2000(?). What a difference!

Good times... I still miss the G-10 though... and the Pony is still under modeled. :devil :bolt:

Wow, I totally forgot the old hangars. These pics bring back a lot of memories; I was in my early twenties when AH appeared... lots of free time back then, not so anymore. Got burned out some years ago and left "for a while", and while I tried to come back two or three times, not having as much free time as the game demands is a big enjoyment killer.
I'm still downloading each new version and trying it offline, just to see how AH is doing. It sure has changed a lot since 1999; I still remember the beta flat terrain map, the canyons, the introduction of vehicles and ships... the Loose Rivets! and names, lots of names of people all over the world that were a very important part of the experience.

Looks about the same as it does now. Same 1990's graphics. :bolt:

Play in the various arenas will cost a flat monthly fee of US$29.95.
Also only the old timers remember paying this much for AH. :) More planes, better graphics and game play and the price went down. Can't complain. :)

what would today's players do if they had to walk out on to the tower deck, down the stairs across the airfield to the map room.. then go to the hangar...... then once they got in their bird, they started it up and had to taxi it out to the runway to take off......... and don't forget about going off the end of the runway and not having enough speed and going off the end of the mountian top..... ROFL......
none of this instant click and you are there or auto take off etc.......
if HTC had not made things as easy as they are today, I doubt we would have that many a playing the game, had they kept it like it was in the beginning.......
( I think if one turns their GUI speed all the way down in the options/preferences they might can still do the slow walk, is that feature still there?....... maybe I am thinking of the GUI background color slider that is in preferences now )

there was a time when this had to be done? if so, HTC should bring it back...would be amazingly fun.

Remember the way the walls of the town buildings used to fly through the air when you blew them up? I'll always miss that. Back then there were only around 16 town buildings so I have no doubt where my poor frame rates would be if that happened with the new towns, or the strat lol.

Does anyone know where I can dowload one of these early versions of aces high?
-
I have a couple of old versions sitting somewhere on one of my hd drives. If HTC doesn't mind, I could send you wathever I find....

The most recent to have the RV-8... correction, or the one with the RV-8 with the gattling gun would be the best. :rock

gattling gun is in the game code for all with teh RV-8, but you cannot use this offline. Offline it only allows you to fly it unarmed.
