Geez I understand this whole touch screen crap but come on just leave Windows 7 alone. It actually works and works better than anything else you guys have put out in the last 25 years. Now if they would just get out of the browser wars it would be so much better.

touch screens are a dead end technology. Microsoft has the tech to make them obsolete and you'll probably see this in Win 2008.

AHH so THIS is the infamous "80 character limit" thread!
For the record guys, if it won't let your reply then remove the "Re: " from the subject line.. or just cut it to make it shorter.
Enjoy!

Touch screens are "gimmicky" to me. So is Win8. All it is is a bunch of useless features that may be cool to play with for a day or two and then it will never be used. That's pretty much everything these days.
It's all about making people think that they WANT these options when 99% of them.. even those who think they want it.. will never use it to its full potential.

They are? They aren't going anywhere, trust me.
Win8 will be aimed at syncing a portable device, like a Win based cellphone, to a PC much more easily. Microsoft made a mistake not getting into the cellphone OS market sooner and they are seeing the results now. A few originally portable OS may migrate now to PCs and may start to affect Microsft in the long term.

Oh yes they are, and MS already hold the patent to the replacement technology, as well has API's for the tech already in WM7.

I heard of a technology in the process of contax lenses having computer screens on them that you control with your brain waves. Funny, I'd rather stick with my Touch screen phone. :uhoh

Are you talking about the kinect based input? That's going to be even worse then touch screen. You need to wave like a martial artist to perform a task you earlier needed a 2cm mouse move and a click for :)
-
That's the point, it's to get you to move and expend energy and become a little more fit than you were.

Still will be using XP. Windows has not improved from a security stand point sinces in inception. Widgets arent enough for me to buy, learn and learn to hate all over again.

Never heard of it :)

the kinect stuff, API's are in WP7 already. Work is under way for camera's better suited to laptops, desktops, tablets, phones etc. It's going to nuke the touchscreen market, though I'm not sure on the mouse replacement yet,

What if I make a gesture I don't want it to register? For example, I may want to scratch my [insert part of body here] while using a computer. How will it detect that I'm not trying to type the letter 'a', or something?

Because there are people better than you at programming input devices ;)

are you saying that either "windows XP is just as secure" or "windows XP is more secure" as/than Windows 7 currently is?
.....just trying to understand your reply about

is there any published articles, reviews, white papers that one could find to read up on regarding this?

No way, that's unpossible.

UM.....It will always be security risk. Don't know how much more specific I can get. All Microsoft OS's are vulnerable to one degree or another. Some maybe more so than others. Even with AV software they are only saving you from known issues. Someone can create a new virus that will get you no matter who you are or what software you are using. They even figured out how to hack systems that were not connected to the internet at all.
-
Currently windows 7 has 1/5th of a chance of an infection statistically compared to a fully patched XP SP3.
So security has improved quite much, especially if you use UAC and do not browse the web using IE or the administrator account.
-
Here is a recent pcworld article, regarding Newer Windows OS & Newer MS Software security abilitys.... in todays world

Ill still use XP Pro, personally I hate Vista and 7

On a security related note those who said 'famous last words' about me migrating my parents to Ubuntu after they messed up their XP once again: my parents now use linux fluently. I needed to return a couple of times to adjust the sound in Skype and install a wireless 3G USB dongle to their now already 2nd linux machine, laptop, but that's it. They now use Ubuntu for everything they earlier used XP for, minus the need to worry about viruses or running antivirus software.
All in all I was positively surprised how painless the migration was.

Why is it not more popular?

Why is it not more popular?
Fear of unknown primarily I'm guessing. Second reason is that it still needs SOMEONE to set it up so that all familiar windows fonts, adobe flash etc. are installed ready. It's a quick 10 minute process but requires a bit of knowledge. After that it's just point and click basically.
My parents were already heavily using cloud based e-mail etc. so I didn't even need to set up an e-mail client - all I had to do was to add quick links to Firefox basically. Skype had to be installed but that was a couple of clicks away (through built-in software installation utility that Ubuntu has, you select the software, choose 'install', give administrative password and then choose if you want a quick link to your toolbar or not).
Edit: One reason it's not spreading like wildfire is obviously lack of support for windows games. That's a big no-go for families with children but also a non-issue for most grown ups.
-
just games or most windows software...say like professional software like cad and solid works.

Direct support lacks to most windows software. Many can be run directly with Wine though. But there are open source alternatives to most commonly used programs. Photoediting, video, instant messaging, audio, even games... Only teenagers who need to run crysis will be blocked out basically.
Also some professional use programs may not run but for general type of office work (handling office, excel etc.) Linux works better straight out of the box than windows, it has libreoffice built in. Some may cringe on the differences of use, some welcome them as its NOT using ribbon but the 'good old' style of UI.

Happy experimenting, afterall it's totally free. Only costs your time.
One comment: If you're going to use linux, going nvidia is far more trouble free than ATI. Older ATI cards may not support 3D at all due to lack of support on ATI. Newer cards seem to work pretty ok (tested 5850). Nvidia generally speaking works out of the box, once you boot in an automatic selection comes where you choose if you want to use the nvidia driver or the open source alternative. You should choose the nvidia driver for speed and reliability.

Update: I got AH2 run on Ubuntu by simply installing Wine and downloading the setup + running it. Joystick works, audio works, graphics work and I could fly offline.
Abysmal performance though - 20-45fps on a Core2duo 3,4Ghz + 5850 radeon.
