I love to kill gvs in it, just A: you can't use the parascope.
B: I'm tired of looking at American gauges.
C: It just needs to look better internally and externally.

It would be nice to have the Parachute :D on landing.
Parascopes though? :P I have been working with a German book that has nothing but Arado blueprints & documents & with Lusches's help on translation I have been trying to find exactly what is the view like through the periscope. The Periscope had a two functions checking behind for attackers & with a flip of a switch it would face forward to be used in conjunction with an on board computer to assist with aiming in its dive bomber roll. Most people think it was a dedicated level bomber in fact it was capable of doing both quite well although most pilots liked dive bombing over the level method.
A nice photo of the Periscope eye piece you can see the switches on the side one is for off & on & the other is for switching front & back views.

Right side view & I believe the attachment point for the computer.

The myth of the periscope being used for rear gunning is just that a myth on the AR-234-B. No rear guns were ever fitted on this model.
These are the latest pages that are in for translation.

It would be nice to see this plane along with all the others that are due for a remodel & in particular getting all the bells & whistles this aircraft did carry.
Plus 1 for an update. :aok

-1 for an update.
well, not totally against it, but put it at the bottom of the list.
out of the 30-40 hours a week I fly, I see one, maybe two Ar234s flying a month.
-
Are there any 234's still air-worthy or flying in the world?

No.

Only one still left in the world & it is in the Smithsonian.

I fly them once in a while, but there really isn't much use for them in the MA. They just do not carry enough load to do all that much damage, and there are not many "high value" targets that justify taking one out. If there were high value targets on the map that were deep in the enemy backfield (bridges, strategic radar stations, etc) then you might see more of them get used.

actually no, if the targets were deep behind enemy lines, you'd most likely see them used even less due to the short amount of fuel they carry, and the amount they will burn just climbing to a respectable altitude.
you could take the 2 droptanks option, but that only leaves you with space for 1 bomb, not really worth the trouble.

You don't need "respectable altitude".

You don't need "respectable altitude".
that would depend on wether the target your hitting his any ack or protection, and if it did how thick it is.
if it has decent ack cover, then i'd want to be atleast 9-10k before i approached it. especially with some of 1 hit kills the ack usually does on me.

I read in a magazine in the mid to late '90s a blurb about them restoring their Ar234 to full flight worthy status. So apparently that one can fly (technically -- I don't think they do it much)
-
Not sure I would call 9-10k "respectable" Not to mention the alt limit of ack...... Which is not 9-10k. :salute

Llogan: Performance wise the speed of the Ar234 doesn't increase much from deck to fastest alt.
Anything from 12k to 24k would be best, but if you look at deck speeds there's only 25mph or so max difference. Lower down you're still super fast. Faster than most planes. The only threat is if cons are significantly higher they have dive speed on you. Otherwise 9k is more than respectable in this ride. It climbs so poorly I find myself levelling off around 10k or so anyways just so I can get to target and back before I run out of gas.

Pretty sure they don't do it at all.
They do move it from one display facility to another from time to time, when they do it is pulled apart & driven & then reassembled.
No way a museum like the Smithsonian will let a super rare one of a kind aircraft fly again,to much of a risk of losing it.
-
You may be right about the flyability of it, but I disagree about the "no museum would fly it" bit because there are a number of aviation museums that do that very thing. The one in Arizona comes to mind. Some specifically try to keep the planes flying, so that when it comes time to move them you simply fly them.

I said SMITHSONIAN. :)

Great chart, but I didn't mention speed. Why did you show us? I simply said 10k isn't respectable, and then went on to hint about the 6500 ft reach of ack. :headscratch: Great chart though. :salute

The SMITHSONIAN flying the arado would be like a b-24s flying at tree top lvls for a mission.....ohh wait bad analogy. ;)

Respectable suggested "safe" or "worthy"
Usually when choosing an alt you look for the peak speed on the speed chart. You look at a Betty for example it tops out 9K then drops off really bad and goes back up. So unless you fly at FTH your second best bet is 9K
So along those lines I included the speed chart to show that most of those alts are pretty respectable. Speed will save you in that plane. Speed, and staying out of the ack :P (as you mention)

Fair enough. You saying the Smithsonian doesn't have flying planes at all? I know they have an extensive static display, but none at all? Color me a little surprised. :)
-
You know what, I have to agree with you when you put it that way. I replaced the 234 in my head with the Mossie16 and you are right, I do the same thing... RTB around 26,450ft.
