Come fight the first Carrier Battle in history. Planes will include for the Americans the F4F, SBD, TBM, P-39D, B-25C. For the Axis they will include the A6M2, D3A, B5N, KI-67, and G4M1.
Intense action awaits as the Japanese attempt to sieze Port Morsby with an invasion force covered by two of the carriers which 6 months earlier had savaged Pearl Harbor.
The Americans, forwarned by intelligence intercepts have stationed two of carriers and a precious few other warships in an attempt to stop the invasion and protect Austraia.
This scenario will be ran on Saturday Evenings US time. The arena will close down at 9:30 pm Eastern with launch time of 10:00pm Eastern. Scenario length will be 3 hours.
Show-Up Time is 9:30 pm Eastern Time on Saturday Evening US TIME in the Special Events II Arena. The arena will be closed to admittance after that time.
The frames will run on the following dates.
July 23, 2011: Coordination Frame.
Week off for Final Coordination
August 6, 2011: Frame 1
August 13, 2011: Frame 2
August 20, 2011: Frame 3
August 27, 2011: Frame 4
Final Design will be posted June 12th.
Registration will open on June 19th.
Watch this space and the forums for the announcement.
NOTE: This will be a SIDE SWITCH EVENT. You will register for ALPHA or ZULU side and you will fly American for two frames and Japanese for two frames.
We will be registering people by plane type; Land Based Fighters, Naval Fighters, Dive Bombers, Torp Planes, Twin Engined Bombers, Twin Engined Scouts.
Please use the comment section of the registration to indicate what unit you want to fly in and who you want to fly with. Every effort will be made to honor this request, but there are no guarrantees. The earlier you register the better.
COs are needed for both sides. If you are interested please contact Fencer51 on the forum using the PM function.

Was wishing for BoB, but I wont complain about staying in the Pacific....Banzai!!!!

Awesome...
:aok

awesome....
personally i loved the side-switch last time. it was my first ever scenario as well.
one question though, last time the B-25 and the Ki-67 were to be used as scout planes ONLY, with something like 3 scouts per side. with the addition of the G4M, will there be a squadron of B-25s for bombing as well?
looking forward to it!

i'm going to throw my hat in the ring for GL of a Naval Fighter Group (F4F, A6M)
one job is fine, oneway just has no life :neener:

At least it is side switch. If it weren't, I am afraid there would be very little enthusiasm. Either way, I will be there.
If we do the 8th Pursuit Group thing again, I volunteer for the A6M/P39 duty.

Are we expecting any editing of the Coral Sea Terrain before the event?

No

Glad to see this event will be at primetime. Should be better numbers, probably not great but better.

I love this scenario, glad to see it back! Probabley the most challenging and thus rewarding when you pull off your objective(s).

You remember the fun us VTs had last time, don't ya? :D I think I may of snagged Waystin's ear about it, most of us pigs might try to go with a VT as a result, let us know if ya want to team up.

BoB first kicked off historicaly in September, yes? Keep your fingers crossed (as are mine) for the September/October/November slot. :pray

Before BoB is reran we are waiting on a couple things to show of which we would need at least one.. and I do NOT have any info on when or if that will occur.

He111?
My gawd I think I'd register as a Luftwaffe bomber pilot if we got that'n
-
IMO, We really need Ju-88A-1 or He-111H to do BOB again. It *can* be run with the same old planeset, but it really breaks the illusion when Spits can barely keep up with bombers and Hurricanes can't even barely keep up.
It wouldn't hurt to have re-modeled hurricanes and 110Cs, either! Hurricanes currently roll way too fast and 110Cs seem excessively nimble (and have about 40hp too much per engine -- minor point but it has been mentioned before as a gripe)
-
+1 to your points, Krusty. Would prefer the Heinkel myself. Much more elegant bomber and the sight of it inspires thoughts of the battle.

Got Maps?
I am chomping at the bit for Coral Sea...and it cannot come soon enough...

3Q Coral Sea Wish List:
- Pre-dawn carrier aircraft launches (as in night)
- Post-dusk carrier aircraft recovery (as in night)
- Use of PT boats from the South East Port Moresby spawn (P13 ~ 7.10.9.5) to emulate submarines
- Winds starting at sea level (0 & ^) for frames 1 and 3
- Unpublished winds
- Variable winds that change during the frame; wind shifts

We sort of had that in last running of it. ROC has been having problems with time acceleration, so not sure if he is going to do it this time, alas.

- Use of PT boats from the South East Port Moresby spawn (P13 ~ 7.10.9.5) to emulate submarines
We did that in 1st running of Coral Sea, but it ends up being a big surface fleet engagement, not submarine like. (Pics here: http://electraforge.com/brooke/flightsims/scenarios/coral_sea/frame2_pictorial.html ).
- Winds starting at sea level (0 & ^) for frames 1 and 3
We did sea-level wind in the 1st running, but there is (still, as far as I know) an apsect to sea-level wind in Aces High: it greatly affects LVT's in the water. With a 10 mph surface wind, a 10 mph vector is added to your LVT's normal vector. Your LVT makes no headway into the wind, etc. This affected the 1st Coral Sea and Stalin's Fourth, so we decided not to have surface wind in Coral Sea 2009. If it doesn't affect LVT's that way any more, then I too think we should have surface wind back.
That's doable -- not sure how the rest of the player base feels about it.
- Variable winds that change during the frame; wind shifts
This is more of a pain to do during the event than the benefit of doing it is worth, in my opinion.
[/list]
-
No need for LVT in Frames 1 and 3...thus maybe we can try it (wind) again for those frames?
I found the whole manual intervention thing with the boats in the last frame kind of ponderous and lame (they had to be pointed into an imaginary wind to launch and recover)...that was such management hassle overhead that really took some of the luster off the event for the commanders...not to mention you end up 'cheating' by accident...
Felt terrible...
I wish HT could fix or scrub out wind effects on waterborne vehicles (LVT, PT's etc) so we can some day actually let the wind be the wind...
As to wind shifts...its 30 second arena - environment change during a frame...even faster if you program a macro to handle it...
Anything that changes the linear nature of an event is good in my book...
How about a Solar Eclipse?
LOL

Any change, no matter how trivial, during a running scenario introduces dangers. All you have to do is mistakenly get another digit in there, and you wipe people out and ruin the whole frame. Probability of doing that is low, but not zero, and cost if it happens is enormous. P * C is then not trivial for a minor benefit.
-
Oneway, believe it or not, some of us do know how long it takes to change a wind setting :D
Changing certain settings during an event has a nasty habit of affecting other things, completely unrelated. So, it is more important that stability win out over risk.

I was thinking the same thing ROC after I posted that response to Brooke...
Its one thing to recover at frame start from a dynamic settings change...
Its an entirely different can of worms to attempt to recover from an errant and accidental setting mid frame...
As much as I would love to see random obstacles thrown up...this is certainly not an idea even worthy of further consideration...(mid frame wind changes)..
You guys are right and I am wrong...
Harumph
However....As to random obstacles and challenges...I am steadfast...lets find a way to make it difficult and dynamic for the commanders/planners...
That wind thing in frame 4 (Rangoon) was positively invigorating...like a drug...I want more or it...

- Post-dusk carrier aircraft recovery (as in night)
For me, one of the more memorable moments during the last Coral Sea was landing on the CV at night. The first and only time I've done so.

The schedule has been bumped a week forward because of the holiday(s) that came through on the last event...
The announcement was on the 8'th so the writeup will be out on or about 15'th give a day or two...
That is my guess...

Glad you like the splash screen. Those aren't AH clouds unfortunately. I found some cloud brushes for Photoshop and painted them over the all blue AH sky.

We are about done discussing changes to it. Should be out tonight or tomorrow morning.
Its 95%+ the same as last time, with the KI67 Scout being replaced by the G4M1, the land based dive bombers on both sides being replaced by twin engined bombers (G4M1 and B-25C). 6 additional fighters based at Moresby and Lae for each side, and the addition of hangars at a few bases as targets.
We had intended on running another event this time, but some difficulties arose on a specific item which was essential to the success of the new design, so it got postponed.

Holy crap.....a 9:30pm start up count me in..
Need to brush up on my carrier ops.. :x

ROC will be running herd on this one, with Soulyss and Guppy35/Corkyjr acting as his "Herders in training".
Side CMs have not been selected yet, but I will not be doing that this time as I am "tentative" at the moment.
Rules go up tomorrow but they are essentially the same as before minus the items I noted above.
Note that this is a side switch event, you will fly Japanese and American both. Its a real fun event.
Also, registration will start at around Noon Eastern on Sunday.
One CO is in place and we are still accepting offers for the other position.
ROC will now be the source of all information for the event.
-
I know exactly who I would love to see lead the Alpha Team...
And I would pour every ounce of possible effort into to helping him...
I am crossing my fingers he steps up and takes on the role....
If he does...great...if it is somebody else...I will commit just the same...

There will be an announcement this weekend on the COs. Team Alpha has confirmed, Team Zulu still needs a CO.
-
ALERT BREAK ALERT:
Allied Commanders in Australia are convinced that an Imperial Japanese Navy attack on Port Moresby is imminent.
Yesterday afternoon two Japanese Submarines were spotted patrolling East of Babinda in shoal waters and they eluded Allied intercept efforts....Japanese submarines were also spotted south of Port Moresby off of a Hula Point....these are the latest events in a series of aggressive penetrations of Imperial Japnese Naval Forces...and are inductive of the hostile intent of Tokyo towards the peaceful and innocent citizens of Port Moresby...
Aerial and coastal reconnaissance North and East of New Guinea confirms that the IJN is massing a naval invasion fleet with its sights set on Port Moresby...several Japanese Aircraft Carriers were spotted north of New Britain either making ready to put to sea...or under way..Coastal Watch reports numerous IJN aircraft have been shuttled into Lae...both fighters and bombers...along with supplies and support...these aircraft are a mere 15 minutes from striking the citizens of Port Moresby...
If Moresby falls....the Australian North Western Coast is next...
The fate of Western Civilization hangs in the balance...

After reading the write up and changes...
This running is radically different from the last running
Though the changes might seem subtle on their face...the impacts will be profound and change the entire nature of required prosecution
My two cents

Interesting, so none of the B25 squadrons can use formations. This should be fun. :D

B25 CAN use formations in the bombing roll
NOT in the scouting roll
Same goes for the Betty

# B-25C bombers must be glass-nose models, no formations allowed. Also they may not use the 3 - 1000 lb bomb option.
# B-25C scouts (no formations) must be glass-nose models and must jetison bombs before takeoff.

It is a railway siding, sugar mill and a pub:) I'm guessing a topographical feature such as an island or cape might be more typical. Good stuff though! :aok

My philosophy in regards to the wildcat vs. The zero is if you are in a wildcat, you better be going in with a buddy or you're dead, because as good as I am at evasives in this bird, I can never shake off a zeke unless I have a wingman. No matter what you do, scissors, loops, lazy rolls, the zeke will always stay on you. I always say in events like this, SA is the #1 killer of zekes

Absolutely you can join. Just go here to register (if you can make at least 3 of the 4 frames):
http://ahevents.org/scenario-registration.html
(You need to register on the ahevents.org site to get in to registration.)
If you can't make at least 3 frames, show up by Show-Up Time on game day, and you'll get to play.
