Title: Don't they teach basic physics in school anymore?
Post by: saggs on June 11, 2011, 07:19:44 PM
Some players arguing on country over the Brewster FM in the MA today.  I take no stance on if it's accurate or not, don't really care.

But some of the physics arguments being thrown out there where making me laugh and cry at the same time, laugh at their stupidity, and cry that their education failed so badly.  Mr. Newton would be saddened if he where around today, by the fact so many people fail to understand his 3 laws of motion.

Examples!  We demand examples!

Names can be omitted to spare the guilty.  :P

names would be worth it though...

what kind of school they go to? i go to school where some of the teachers could almost care less about us and yet we still get tought basic physics. -public school.

They do.
Unfortunately, they don't on the History Channel.

Wait until they try practical application of thier physics on a real vehicle....

Yes, they do, great class.

I'm not giving names...

Just some arguments about how heavier fighters like a Jug can dive and zoom climb better...  because they are heavier.  :huh

If you jump off something high you die, if you drop something heavy from really high up you go to prison. All the physics you need.  :rofl

On that note I might add that my Physical science teacher was a bit insane.  :noid I think what he taught was right but he was questionable sometimes  :uhoh

they do still probably teach it....but in todays world, everyone's a winner, and everyone passes.

I kid you not.

"A barrel of oil weighs 306lbs. At 72 billion barrels used per day, the Earth is losing weight at the rate of over 22 billion lbs per day, which is over 8 trillion pounds per year. That seems like a pretty significant number to me, even for a planet. How long does this have to continue before the mass of the Earth is decreased enough to affect its orbit around the sun, or the moon's orbit around the Earth? Sadly, it looks like we're stupid enough to find out"

Talk about Newton...
2nd law...
It takes more force to slow down an object with more mass than one with less mass

Heavier objects have more momentum and take longer to decelerate. They're not saying heavy fighters climb better because they are heavier, they are saying heavy fighters can bounce back up and regain a lot of E quickly if they don't blow their momentum. The AHWiki stresses this fact several times when talking about aircraft such as F4U's, F6F's, and P-47's. Search for the word "zoom" in any of the aircrafts' bios: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/wiki/index.php/P-47D-11

If the rest of their claims are about as unrealistic as that example I think someone needs to do less dismissing and more listening.

Thats simple physics right there, reason behind why a car can stop quicker than an 18 wheeler its all about mass

 :lol :lol  <- at myself.

Yeah, I kind of stepped in it there.  Let me explain.

I understand inertia and drag just fine, the whole F=MA equation, therefore a heavy fighter can carry more force into a climb.   My example was unclear.  What the people arguing didn't understand was gravity.  The argument I was referring to was that a Jug could dive faster because of gravity, that gravity "pulled" it down faster giving it more speed for a zoom climb.  Yes, a Jug can dive faster, but it is because more drag force is required to slow it's inertial force, not because gravity "pulls" it more.

Another one of my pet peeves is how many people misunderstand how jet propulsion works.   I was talking with a moon landing hoax guy the other day, who said it was a hoax, because rockets can't work in space  because there is no atmosphere for them to "push" against.    I tried to explain Newton's third law to him, and that that's how jet propulsion works, but he never got it.

Couldn't or wouldn't, we'll never know.  Some people are so tied up in their own rectitude that they won't admit it when proven wrong, even if they get it.

Some people are just plain stupid too.

At my High School i didn't take physics. I took a class called Physics through aviation. We learned about airplanes, and flew on simulators. Then you could do what i did, and the next year take aviation two at the airport and get your pilots licence.
