B-17 crash landed outside of Chicago. All seven passengers escaped thankfully but the beautiful old warbird was consumed by the fire.

Alas, very sad news about the plane, and very thankful that no one died.

Very sad!
Are planes like this required to have modern fire supression equipment? Would it have saved it?

Wow that really bites. Great everyone got out OK, but It's always sad to see one of those old warbirds lost forever.

No, not that I know of. We did have engine fire suppression systems on both the Nine O Nine and the B-24. In the case of Liberty Bell it wouldn't have mattered judging from photos of the fire inflight. The flames were coming from well aft of the engines, between the #1 and #2 engine -- in the area just behind the aft, inboard fuel tank. Fire suppression systems are generally forward of the firewall.

You fly 909?

You fly 909?
I used to fly the Nine O Nine and The Dragon and His Tail.

Actually almost took a ride on 909 2 days ago, that's why I asked. Sadly, in the end, my tuition won the battle of what get's the money, lol.

Always sad to lose a veteran. Whether flesh and blood or aluminum and steel.
