Title: Marshalling Jets
Post by: Plawranc on June 17, 2011, 02:18:10 AM
I know some of you must have seen this but for those who haven't.

This is why the RAF is the best of all the Air Forces.

Warning: Useless war story

Back during the unpleasantness of Vietnam we had a mechanic in our rescue squadron that was afraid of marshalling our HH-53s. You had to stand in close so you could let the pilot know the position of the droop stops as the rotor RPM decreased.
This mechanic would always disappear whenever it was time to recover an aircraft. One day our line chief grabbed this guy and made him stand there and marshall in the helicopter until the refueling probe touched his chest. He was fine after that.

wonder why, the rotor sits up so high not like our 60s but funny none the less. :D

Each blade has a droop stop on it to keep the blade from contacting the fwd fuselage when the blades are turning at a slow RPM. As they get to speed, centrifugal force lets the droop stops pop out and the blades are allow to go down farther. So the guy marshalling the helicopter watches these droops stops to make sure they come back in as the blades slow down. He gives a thumb in or out to let the pilot know the position of the stops.  Even though they are spinning at the same RPM as the blade root, you can still see them. You can tell if even just one is stuck out.
I have no idea if the newer 53s have these, but the B and C models I crewed did.

Not a B or C model 53 but close enough.  This shows the droop stop in the stowed position, keeping the blade from dropping to low.
When the rotorhead reaches a certain RPM  centrifugal forces allows them to swing out allowing the blades to droop lower.

Now you know more than you ever wanted to about droop stops.   :D

Why do they kneel when a jet goes by?

IF you are asking about the navy crew it's to keep them from a possible strike and to deal with the wind from the engines.

Would you like to stand behind that jet blast to find out?

That was funny,  enjoy it.
