and you were looking to buy a Headset, what in your opinion would be the best purchase available? Recognizing that price isn't necessarily indicative of quality, what would you get?

I can't give you much of a recommendation, but I can tell you what I do know. Gamecom Plantronics headset is not very durable at all. Both I had cracked, both are now held together with masking tape.
Now, I'm not certain if this is indicative of ALL of their headsets, I could've always gotten an unlucky break. <S>

I have a set of turtlebeach 5.1 surround sound . 4 speakers in each ear cup, awesome sound. Mic works great too .

Thanks guys. I will admit that I'm leaning toward Tritton's AX Pro. It seems to have a good deal going for it, but I wanted to check in with the community to see what they would use, and maybe see if anyone here is using the Tritton product.
Gosh, don't wanna hijack my own thread, so back to the question. If money were no object, what headset would you buy?

I have the Logitech G35 headset here is the link for it at NewEgg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104281&Tpk=Logitech%20g35
It may be a USB headset but I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
Great sound and best of all 6 different voice morphing (to irritate your squad members) options.

Hmm, where on your body do you stick the .1? Okay, on second thought don't answer.

Same here, the Turtle Beach HPA2 (http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/pc-gaming-headsets/ear-force-hpa2.aspx), and very happy with them.

Well yes, I did state "money no object", but I thought the inference was clear. Gaming headsets :lol, and unless I'm wrong, those Bose A20's are for Aviation only. Not much use to a PC pilot. :D

I have a set and except for the microphone (which I had to reinforce), it is a great headset.

With the proper adaptors they work just fine with PCs. One of the FS sites sells them and the adaptor (PC Pilot maybe).
I have two headsets that I use outside of the aviation grade. The Heil Proset Media Pro (Ham radio broadcast quality) and the AKG K171. The Heil was actually commissioned by the US Navy due to its durability. The AKG is probably more comfortable but it does require you have another mic (which you didnt ask about but since you mentioned gamer headset you must want it included). I use the Sound Blaster X-Fi with the front panel controller and it automatically responds to the presence of the Heil and the mic is perfect for it.
I consider these gamer quality but you can get much better performance or even wireless if you free up your dollars. USB products just dont compare.

Senheiser, Sony or Logitech

Thanks to all who responded. Looks like I'll have to make a choice. :salute

I have the Turtle Beach AKR8 which is the USB interface version of the HPA2 (both use the same exact headset). After over 3 years one of my right speakers is starting to go. The AKR8 was discontinued long ago, and it looks like Turtle Beach JUST discontinued the HPA2. The replacement is the Z6A (click on image for more info). Yesterday I scored a slightly used HPA2 set for $30 from ebay (supposedly used only a half dozen times and missing the mic) but I can easily transfer the mic over from my old set to the new. It will also be refreshing to go through the onboard 5.1 sound instead of a USB controller, although I really don't know which is worse! We'll see!

So the bump is older than your headset? :devil
for the record I have a set of Turtle Beach EarForce HPA2 that I have used for a couple of years with out any trouble.

I've been using the $30 used HPA2 set I got at my last post and they're still holding up just great! Ends up the notch that holds the mic was broken on the replacement set so just for S&Gs I hooked up the amplifier for the HPA2 set to my original headset and it sounds great again! Ends up it wasn't the speaker that was going it was the amplifier for the USB set!
The sound is even better using my on board surround instead of a USB interface and the computer seems a bit snappier too! No more "micro-stutters" when firing the guns etc... and I have a spare heaset for parts should I ever need it.
It's good to know how cheesy the Z6A is so I can avoid those later on.

I had the HPA2's as well they broke but at least lasted longer than these things.
