Title: for somebody that knows a thing or two
Post by: olds442 on June 30, 2011, 11:16:12 AM
ok i got myself a problem

i have a Honda 400cc rancher  ATV i just changed tires on it to ITP 589 mud&snow tires.

well i rode it this week and noticed something there is a grinding noise in the motor.
i know these tires are not too big because a lot of people have them on 400cc ATVs (that i have seen)

the motor is old its a 2005 only thing Ive changed was the spark plugs.
so i start going into this motor and i see nothing wrong with it piston looks ok rings look good. so then i go to the bottom of this engine and everything looks good crank looks good and so on. so i say if i cant find out whats wrong maybe my dad can but when i out the motor back together and start it up this grinding noise is gone??? the transmission is a 5 speed auto and is brand new basically.

why was this engine making this grinding noise that was VERY loud. i fear if i ride it more it will happen and this motor will die on me when I'm out riding?

so anybody who knows about this please comment thanks.

EDIT: and yes i did go into the head and it looked ok

Do you have the right oil in the transmission and has it been properly maintained?

I hear those are succeptable to noise if oil is old or bad.

yes i think i found out what it is. it was not coming out of four wheel drive all the way so the gear was stuck in the transfer case the motor and the trasmisson are one unit and the transfer case is in the tranny so it sounds like the motor when its only a stuck gear. or i think

could be in the starter but if its grinding all the time its probably not in there.

Is it a constant noise? If not when exactly does it happen (start, accelerating, deceleration, gear shifting, ect..)?
