Title: You never know till you look
Post by: ebfd11 on July 02, 2011, 04:16:48 AM
This is a little headsup to the people who are thinking on building their rigs themselves.

I have finally gotten mine to an "acceptable" point. BUTTTTTTT. I wanna get a new processor to make it just that much better. Well in the process of doing that I got curious as to what I had invested in my current rig...

I was astonished as to what I found...

NZXT Phantom http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146067&cm_re=nzxt_phantom-_-11-146-067-_-Product                                 $140.00

*Disclaimer* The prices shown were brand new and don't include shipping.

Also this is to show once you get into building your own rig take it part by part just don't go all in, I built this over 2 years and piece by piece.

I wanna upgrade to an i7 processor to this one

It is a little faster than I can sell my current processor and make a little money ...LOL

the price there... that seems high. how many people for their FIRST rig are going to need watercooling, and 16gb ram on a full tower case? i spent 800 on mine and it runs aces high like a dream.

LOL Masonz that is why i posted this, this rig was a piece build...you know get a piece here a piece there... I did not buy everything out right all at once.. it was over a period of 1.5 years.

I just wanted to let people see the total they can put into a rig without knowing it. Like the title says "you never know till you look" and I was astonished as to what i dropped into this rig over that time. (Dammed addition)

Mason I would recommend it in a heartbeat, but be advised it is a LARGE case lots of room for good airflow and it has alot of space behind MB for hiding your wires.

Front = Intake would be what you'd want.    You'd also get rid of the small HDD cage.   IIRC there is even mounting holes for a fan there.

actual cost for me is probably around 1000, since I sold my old gateway computer when i first upgraded to an e8400 based system.  then I sold that cpu/mobo/ram to upgrade to the new 2500k based system.  I also sold my old vc which lowered the price for my current vc to 200.  most of the stuff i got was bought on sale with  little or no shipping.

current system will play with everything maxed out shadows at 2400 can do 4800 but i see no point since I dont see the difference.  fps will go down to 55 every now and then, but that's mostly because I also have fraps recording  :D.

yes, with flat cables.  you can see them clearly on the vc.  only the 8 and 24 pin are round.  ps is quiet cant hear it.  then again, my other fans are old  and they make a lot of noise. thinking of replacing them. but not sure if it's worthy since i mostly use my headset to play the game.

Masonz, if your still looking for a good full tower, I'd suggest the Blackhawk from Xclio, the Blackhawk has 4 120s and a 250, with a spot to put in a 3rd exhaust fan (2 of the 120's are exhaust). Bottom mounted PSU too. I got mine for about $99

Are you running your fans at full speed? IMHO most if not all of the silent fans run slow, which reduces both blade and bearing noises. If there's no room for bigger fans in diameter, silent ones would reduce airflow. You can achieve the same effect with your fan controller. -For those without a controller, it's easy to make fans run at 5 or 7 volts (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article6-page1.html) instead of 12, taking the power directly from the PSU.

yeah but with the phantom, the force will be with you  :D.

thing about the window is after a couple of weeks, you get tired of looking at it  :rofl.

I have a fan controlller. normally runs the fans at 60%.  however the fans run at about 14 or 15 inches away from my right ear.  so they sound noisy.

thats the thing, i dont wanna be distracted by fancy blue LED's while trying to fly.. where the case is going is going to be off to the side of me, but in enough sight where ill be distracted... and the Phantom looks cooler.

to be honest with you.  it doesnt matter which one you buy, you always gonna wish you had gotten the other one  :D.

if you buy the phantom dont forget to install the hd's backwars so connections point towards the back.  easier to hide the cables.  get a fan controller if you can.  besides looking cool, it cuts down on fan noise.

Masonz

The case has in it 2 120 mm fans and 2 80 mm fans and a fan controller on top of the case, with the ability to control up to 5 fans. One of the sliders controls both of the fans blowing across the hard drives, I just moved the fans around and used mine where I needed them the most. I have 2 fans on the side panel blowing across the 2 hard drives and the large exhaust fan from the top on the side of my case blowing across the video cards. I then used 2 fans on my radiator for my water cooling. If you need me to post detailed pics I can.

OK Masonz I hope this helps you out...

This is where I moved the large fan to that originally was the top exhaust fan, all I did was remove the 4 screws and placed it here.

The one on the left is the fan for the video cards, and as you can see the two on the left are the ones for the hard drives.

Fan control sliders on top of case, room to add more as needed. This is my setup.

Also If you are worried about the getting more air into your case there is an optional spot for another fan in the front.

Also both of the side fans on the HD's bay are controlled by one wire, I have had no problem with the connection.

And if you are worried about airflow over the hard drives  this picture you can see that there is a complete aiflow through the case.

I hope that haelps you out
