Discuss, Explain.

Late 2008 and I started flying AH, the balance of power was firmly at the feet of the Rooks, Limbo and Delta missions running the show. A year later it was pretty much Rook and Bish sharing honours with war wins, Jokers and LTARs providing attack and defence, helping Bish gain ground. Knight's being the meat in the sandwich between the superpowers during this time, although, enjoying ultra cheap jets. Come mid/late 2010 it seemed the amassing vForces tipped the balance back into Bish hands, swarming the land of both Knight and Rook. I think at present it's pretty balanced between all three occationally all three win a war.
I like to think of our chess pieces are like WW2 Countries with the character and power they have in general; The Bishops amass like the Russians, swarming in numbers giving little thought to staying alive as long as territory is theirs. The Rooks are your US/UK allies, landgrabbing average throughout, seeking refuge high above. The Knight's are Germany, fighting on both fronts against contries with superior numbers, relying on the quality of pilots not numbers, very rarely having success in the land grabbing stakes.
Well... Just a thought. :o

3 mentally unbalanced sides tend to balance the numbers. :)

Rooks+Knights vs. Bish
Day in. Day out.
Gangbang the Bish until they are at 50%, then maybe if convenient attack each other. If not just keep hammering.
Bish log back on take 30% back while pimp slapping both sides back where they belong.
Bish log off and the gangbang restarts.
Getting kinda old that the only way Rook or Knight can win a map is by going 260 vs 130.
If you guys bothered keeping the fight even you'd watch Bish take map after map.
Day in. Day out.
-
The classics apparently never go out of style. Been hearing this sort of whine for at least 10 years :D
It may be more, I'm getting old and can't remember AW details anymore.
-
From Tour 1 until they took the stat away, Rooks always had the best K/D against both the Knights and Bishops and Knights always had a positive K/D against the Bishops.
I wonder if that has changed? Probably.

So essentially you're saying Bish own all others unless it's 2:1 or greater odds.
My thoughts exactly!! :aok :aok :aok :aok

How balance was REMOVED :furious
We had a new town with a great number of buildings (some of them hidden from plain sight) that had to be destroyed to capture the town and progress towards a country win and reset of a map.
It was clear that new setting was too high for even the best of base takers to have a decent percentage of successful missions or attempts to capture towns.
The game play evolved into a one horde single area battleground for a base capture, using forces in excess of what any defense could mount to prevent the capture.
Others mounted smaller surprise attacks under radar, but still recruited excessive force to supress any defense of the field to be targeted.
:bhead It didn't take long for the shine to rub off. Either the attack force was so large that you barely had a target to hit before it was over, or would be defenders figured, "why give the other guys a kill".
Radar was reduced in height to slow the surprise attacks, and town percentage was decreased to 50 percent and a flag at the maproom indicated it was ready. :rock
Maps were again changing hands and battles were spotted all over the maps with all countries involved.
If one country launched a large raid, the defending country could put up a small defense and go on the offensive in several other areas of the attackers territory.
Basically, grab your gun and roll to any field and someone would be there to meet you to do battle.
This was not good enough, complaints arose that one set of bombers could raise the white flag. :headscratch: So?
But the complaints were loud and many, so a compromise was reached, and the white flag remains but at a percentage of buildings that requires several strikes. :uhoh
We should be good right? :noid Nope. The extra time and extra ordinance needed to prepare a town, is basically enough to give defenders the advantage to shoot defenseless goons or 1 trooper running to the maproom.
Insert HORDE :airplane: :airplane: :airplane: :airplane: :airplane: and around and around we go.

That's because the bishops are lame.
-
Back when I played regularly, the bishops were the most powerful because they had me.
-
The rooks and knights do not gang bang the bish. Having been bish 99% of the time, my opinion is as un-bias as it gets. If anything, the Knights get ganged regularly.

Hello... Power flows from the end of a barrel of a BMG.

Same deal in AW Glenn :)
One of the reasons the Nomads bounced sides back then. Same old same old.
There were two types of groups. The guys that moved to the side with numbers, and the guys who went to the side without. Same traitor, spy talk. It was silly then, it's silly now :)
-
The AK's now again are in a country rotation. Each tour we fly with a different chess piece. Each month I hear the same whines no matter which chess piece we are.
Conclusion, they are all the same...
-

I would have to agree on this. Well, maybe not regularly, but well more than either bish or rook.
-
Us Muppets usually find ourselves fighting on Knights, sometimes Bish, and seldom Rook, in my experience FWIW.
-
I only think red and green when fighting.
-
With the 3 country chess game, if too many folks just attack the red guys, WITHOUT taking into context the board status of all 3 countries, the ganging does occur. Whether it is intentional or just as simple as an overwhelming preference for a battle zone.
One prime example. Last night Rooks were embeded 8 fields into Knight territory in the south. Rooks held a 5 base lead in the overall stats. Bishops were nearing 20 bases fewer than Rooks. Yet, Knights were locked into the same battles that I had observed them in for the past 3 days, that included mostly Bishop combatants. The most striking evidence to my claim, was that all of these fights occured in the center of the map and above. Because the map is so huge, the south was blatantly ignored by the Knights.
Then as we (Knights) rallied a small force to remedy the southern laisez faire, there was more evidence that not only do Knights not pay much attention to that part of the map but also Rooks practically did the same thing. 8 bases changed hands from Rooks to Knights in less than an hour and Knights gained a small lead in the overall stats. Bishops, without gaining territory still closed the 20 field advantage that Rooks had over them. (see how someone might claim they had previously been ganged)
All during this time, both Knights and Rooks continued to battle with Bishops (not a bad thing). The only time that I really consider "ganging" is when one country for the most part ignores intrusion on it's turf by the country currently leading the map stats and launches the major part of its offense directed at the obvious loosing chess piece.
So, it truly is your $15 to spend how you see fit. I just suggest that comradery comes at a price of selflessness.

As a Knight, I take this as a compliment. This is as close to dead on as can be. I have always (flew Bish for a year but started as a Nit and am again) considered Bish suicidal maniacs hellbent on gettin a base no matter what, Rook bein the High alt fighters that when confronted by anything close to even numbers looking to their wingmen, and Nits as the underdog who on 4 outta 5 occasions find themselves fighting off multiple attacks at once. Great analogy of the AH community and <S> to all those who fly in this great Online Community. (This by no means is detracting anything form any country as I will say....I may have my share of crap to say on 200, but I respect everyone of u and usually am mad at myself for bein an idiot and getting killed by my own dumb mistake!) lol
-
I've been flying for Germany all this time?? Neinnnn!!
Love the comparison, it works.
My take on the BoP is that the Rooks are most competent when they set their minds to it, Bish are less competent land grabbers but have their minds set on it most consistently. Knights are traditionally a distant third. I do see this changing however, a couple weeks ago the Knights were ONE base away from the win, semi-historic! Individually the skill is definitely there but most Knights simply furball and those that want to take bases rarely get on the same page. To remedy this I propose a common "war vox" for each front: If you're a Knight wanting to lend your services to the Bish front tune to 104 and get the bases rolled; for the Rook front vox=105. Get on ze same page and we will be rewarded by seeing the Knight's Cross ze map.
:salute

Letalis, that is a Great Idea man! I believe 105 is the Party Animals vox though, so maybe 103/104 or something like that. I also remember hearing whispers of a time when there would be Alliance Nights where a number of Squads all joined forces to Steamroll all in their way! I believe resurrecting that would be a great start for Knights! I would really like to hear thoughts on this matter...maybe in game on a special vox TBD at a later time. Thoughts?

Apparently I'm the only player who has to check each time I fly to see what country I'm in. I really don't pay attention to the icon, just the amount of red vs green.
That anyone can get worked up about it, is beyond me :)

How is wanting to have fun by working together getting worked up???
-
One thing that I've found to be true:
The Rooks/Knights ganging up on the Bishops often starts with the Bishops throwing a lot of material at both fronts. I think most of us look for a darbar before picking a base to take off from.
-
How is wanting to have fun by working together getting worked up???
I believe he is referring to people getting worked about about what side they, or others, fly.
-
Bear,
I think that you are over simplifying Guppy's intent. As, I said previously, it is everyone's $15 to spend the way they chose. What does get me worked up is a great group of guys doing a joint operation, learning to work together for a goal and achieving success. :rock I can fly single minded to shoot drones offline and the Dueling Arena presents plenty of furball action.
It does seem that something must be a bit out of whack, if the system designed to give players a reason for combat, comes in second to looking at a map and determining where the biggest red dar bar is. Then again, a long day at work, or night in the pub, may have used up it's share of brain cells needed to decode anything past that. Hopefully, the latter.
Why does it matter? As the title of the thread refers to "Balance of Power," in the 3 chess piece game that we have, unproportional weakness in any one team, collapses the pyramid, shifting balance one way or another. Since not choosing to play the chess game is simply a choice and it is not really a weakness, but maybe even passive aggressive behaviour, I use the term weakness metaphorically to illustrate how 2 countries may actually unintentionally roll over another country.
Now Guppy, if you understand that even by not participating in the country politics of which bases to attack, simply flying to a fight "just because" still has its effect on all 3 countries. :old:

Ask most vocal knights, this is their interpretation of how things are. Based on a lot of the more vocal players' comments, Knights have always struck me as the 'home of the persecution complex'. I don't mean that as a slam, it's just something I've noticed.
I've flown in all three countries. IMHO there's very little difference between the three, it just rotates who is doing what depending on the time of day you're logged in at or which specific individuals are on.

I really don't think you get what Dan is saying and reading way too much into it. I believe Shuffler knows what I'm talking about.

Gotcha... :rock

Yep Bear,
I gave it another read, and you were correct.
Guppy,
I appologize for misrepresenting your intentions. I guess, that I run into so many with that attitude, that I come to expect it. :salute

Status of power balance:
Constanly shifting depending on which squads are on to do battle with the horde :ahand.
