Title: VMF-213 F4U-1
Post by: Greebo on July 13, 2011, 07:31:24 AM
This VMF-213 F4U-1 was a request from Gary26. It is "De Fabe", the aircraft of Lt. George DeFabio who scored three Zero kills in it between June and July of 1943. On one sortie Japanese AA blew 4 feet of the right wing away but Lt Defabio still managed to make it back to base for a safe landing. This aircraft was based on Guadalcanal where the rough coral airstrip and lack of maintenance facilities gave aircraft a very worn appearance.

You did a very nice job on the pin up based off of what little you had to work with. :aok

Awesome skin as usual Greebo! Love these skins of yours featuring girls without unnecessary clothes. :) Come to think of it I should fly that F6F you've done a bit more. ;) ...and loved the goon with one too, btw. Took a port with it. :)

Anyway, based on that photo I'd add still a lot heavier weathering on it. It would make it even more interesting and IMO would be historically correct based on that photo. One thing that is IMO pretty clear in the photo but doesn't seem to be in the skin is how the paint is overall very very worn and faded. And the oil staining there were the fuselage meets the wing seems to be very heavy on the real plane. There's a shadow over it in that screenshot of yours but I think it could have even heavier staining there.

It easy to go overboard with the weathering but I think there is really a place for it here.

Normally I find nothing to criticize in your work Greebo, but the nose art seems a little subdued compared to the photos perhaps?  Just seems like the colors (like the white of the dice, for example) have a lot more contrast in the picture than on your skin.

Other than that, excellent as always.

Thanks for the feedback guys, those are good points. I'll have another look at the weathering and noseart.

Might also want to take a look at the way I did the fuel tank leaks for F4U-1A #883 (VMF-214). The same sort of staining is evident on this aircraft as well, particularly on its port side.

+1 on more weathering.  Very cool skin.  Naked chicks make great noseart.  :)

Following the suggestions on this thread I've upped the dirt levels on the skin and added some more paint chips, as well as extra oil and fuel stains. The noseart is a bit brighter now and there is now a black background to the "De Fabe" lettering I hadn't noticed on the photo first time round.

Nice pics Megalodan. I dont suppose you could help find any pics of the F4u1a that the 213 used to fly? I really want Greebo to be able to skin the 1a for the 213.

Holy cow!  Totally different vibe on that now.  We should offer criticism more often I guess... :)

Outstanding skin--truly...

I am so sorry. I thought that thread had died. Thanks for putting them up there. Between some of the pics that you have and what I am getting from a "historian"(his father in law flew for the 213) I should be able to put together a good history for the squad.
