Title: Terrain makers - aircraft as terrain objects at fields
Post by: oboe on July 14, 2011, 04:57:12 PM
It'd be cool for terrain makers to be able to add aircraft as destroyable objects at airfields.  This picture is a Spit XIV on takeoff roll from an IL-2 video, and the B-24s in the background I think really add to the illusion of a real, working airfield.  We have have that B-24 skin ingame I think.  And the terrain maker should be able to select the skin on the aircraft he places at fields.

I agree it's a good idea. The argument against is always Frame Rate.

If we have boats at the ports I don't see how airplanes at an airfield would throw frame rate.

I like this too.

The frame rate gonna drop if the planes are burning/smoke after being bombed or shot. (  how many planes one the ground are there talking about? )
What about a creates with shattered planeparts?
But this is an i eyecandy too..  :)

Good point, they get sunk in their slips too without any adverse effect.

What about AI bomber formations to simulate new bombers being delivered to major fields?  The flights start off map somewhere and fly to large and maybe medium airfields, where they land and taxi to a hangar revetment and shut down.   They stay parked there until destroyed by bombing or strafing - they behave like regular targets by breaking and burning for a few minutes, then after the fire goes out they disappear.

Could have a single bomber or transport escorted by a few AI fighters fly between behind-the-lines fields that simulate visits by top brass.  If you catch and shot down these bombers, the country loses ENY or some similar penalty to reflect a drop in morale from the loss of a top leader.

Could also have AI C-47 convoys for field resupply.   Work the same along the same lines as truck convoys but they are C-47s instead.

Just thinking of ways to give people other types of missions to add more variety to the game.   Might break up the hordes somewhat if people choose to do sweeps behind enemy lines.

I'm working on the planes at fields. would be a nice touch to see a Bomber in a revetment, or a 190 with the cowling removed for repair.

Also oboe, working on the C-47 convoy thingy. seeing if I can't adjust the altitude of the convoys, and turn the trucks into C-47's with the object editer.
