Title: SVCHost ??
Post by: SPKmes on July 15, 2011, 03:46:09 PM
What is this.....I have been having issues of late and have been trying to drop my processes  windows xp.. I can usually get them down to 24 before I start...this is by using game booster and then manually removing some others...stupid apple iphone....for some reason I decided to look at the task manager on the opening page of the game and noticed that I then jumped straight up to 31 prcesses....now 5 of these are SVCHost....2 say NEtWORK SERVICE and and 3 SYSTEM...is there a problem here?

also mDNSResponder....plugin-container....S4TSR.EXE<<<  this one I was turning off without any issue but thought I would ask you pC savvy people...but I have no idea about these things...all I know is that if I stop some thing that I shouldn't my PC stops  hahaha...and as for applemobiledevice...this one just keeps restarting..

so of all the ones mentioned here...are any or some safe to diasble????   especially that  SVCHost just seems like a lot.

svchost is a host process for various windows processes. There can be many of them running at the same time, as new processes will start a new copy of svchost instead of jamming the existing one. Check this microsoft info (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056/en) for more. I suggest not to try to disable it.

A good and safe way to cut down processes is to look at the Preferences section of programs running in TaskBar or TaskManager, trying to find and disable "start when Windows starts" and the likes. When you're at it, you'd also might want to disable their automatic updating.

And once again, if you just don't know, Google is your friend. It tells that plugin-container (http://www.google.com/search?q=plugin-container&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:fi:official&client=firefox-a&hl=en) is a component belonging to Mozilla Firefox and s4tsr.exe (http://www.google.com/search?q=s4tsr.exe&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:fi:official&client=firefox-a) is most likely a legit program for disabling EHCI (http://www.intel.com/technology/usb/ehcispec.htm). As you can see, there's many kind of opinions of any process, including virus warnings. Knowing the brands and makers of your computer components may help you determine, whether there's a virus in disguise or not. Also look for any kind of typos, as viruses may use familiar looking names. For the computer a familiar looking name is a totally different animal than the real thing, and so is a correctly named thingy in a wrong place. Thus a running svchost.exe situating in Windows/system32 sounds like the real thing, but if it were in the Program Files folder, or named as svch0st.exe, it most likely would be a virus.

My pleasure.

You're right about confusing descriptions on various process identifying sites. Especially those relying on reader reviews always have some ?ber-geeks telling you should get rid of such crapware, some ?ber careful ones telling it most probably is a virus and then some ordinary people who really do know what it most likely really is.
