Sports has always been big in my family, my younger brother is actually starting his college Football career with Oregon State this next season and has a chance of starting as a true freshman. My older brother played soccer in highschool in Idaho in out of state tournaments, and my parents were athletes in highschool and college, and I did soccer, HS football, and was on the varsity track team for all 4 years of highschool. (Clarification, just track all four years varsity, ran the normal course everything else).
Now all that aside, I honestly want to know why there has to be such a hatred between both Football and Soccer. (I'm only calling it Soccer here as to differentiate between the two more easily). I constantly see folks that say Soccer is a sissy sport, or a kids sport just because they might have had a kid or two play in the local youth recreation league 2-3 years and think that's all it is. I also see folks say that Football is a game where people that are complete meat heads try to pummel eachother into the ground. Neither of these are true, and both always infuriate me when brought up.
So please, I would like this to be an intelligent conversation about the topic.
And, as in tradition of the recent X vs. Y threads,
Discuss.

Different views what is football and soccer. I never played football but did played soccer. Here is my view between them thentwo. Football is a rough hard hitting sport, while soccer is an endorance sport.
-
Imo soccer is boring. Football is our family get togeher hard hitting toughness. Go titans :)
-
Both are exciting in different ways. I like watching both and have played football. The only sport where I have jumped out of my seat and cheered though is soccer.
-
They are both great games, but quite different from each other.
Why people diss on the other I think comes down to wanted to say something like "That thing you like, it sucks."
-
when i was in middle school, soccer vs football was taken to the extreme. Which started due to the Soccer coach.
She made the comment one day that football players were inferior to Soccer players, and that it takes more endurance during a soccer game than playing all 4 quarters of a football game, also soccer players were stronger.
We didnt really appreciate that comment, so during one of our 2 a days, while the soccer team still had not arrived, we had pushed our sled all the way around the outside of the staduim and parked it inside the soccer net.
Then we took the next day off so the soccer coach couldnt get us to push it out. They ended up having to get a truck to pull it out because they couldn't. :rofl
Yep, soccer players are stronger alright
-
Hatred is an overkill word, in this context. I don't think anyone "hates"
either sport. I think it's a matter of lack of interest, one way or the other.
Could be misunderstanding of the sport.
A lot of people don't watch Hockey, for the simple fact that they don't
understand the plays, zones, penalties, etc.
 Oz
-
football is soccer
-
i have never really given American Football a chance, but from my biased point of view, having that many substitutes is overkill.
Our Football is alot more flowing.

Nicely done sir! As I said in the other thread...."As for a real sport it comes down to TWO games on the planet that incorporate everything...American Football and Lacrosse. Speed, power, agility, explosive power, MENTAL toughness, field awareness, etc...I could go on and on but girls or boys kick ball is just that...KICK BALL!"

They are two different games with nothing in common. Why the need to compare them? If you have to compare them, you wont like the results :lol

If your from around here soccer is a sport the smaller kids play at YMCA. That is just the way it is.
The soccer folks are always saying the american football is a sissy sport because of all the padding.
Just a difference of cultures.

That is funny because I noticed a couple of older kids playing in the world cup a few times and rumor has it, not a single one was on parole or had a criminal record. I guess it is just the way it is.
-
I played both throughout junior high, high school. I'd have killed for a lacrosse program within a hundred miles, but sadly it never happened.
football left me with an uglier nose and a cool scar that chicks dig, soccer took my acl/pcl's and left me with a limp.

Why did you assume that folks that play soccer are criminals? Why did you take the time to run them through the system?
-
They are completely different sports, as stated already. Football is a contact sport with short bursts of speed, where as with soccer the players are constantly running. I played soccer and basketball on teams and running in basketball was a breeze after soccer season. I just recently played pick up football for the first time and did surprisingly well. I do not have a large frame to be very physical with larger players, but my strong point was lasting speed. Not only would I out-pace them, but I could still go the same pace after an hour of playing.
This is not to say Soccer players would be better at football than football players, football players are conditioned to move competitors out of the way and have more hard hitting. Where as in soccer you try to limit contact. Just different animals.

OK, I ll play along for a bit. Where did I say that? "Why did you assume that folks that play soccer are criminals?"

Obviously posting this you thought that soccer players were criminals. No one stated anything about them being criminal or not till you did. I know your just posting to post as usual. So I'll let you get back to your hands on self gratification.
-
I think he was trolling, trying to say that many Football players are criminals (rape, dog fights, etc.) and soccer players are not.

Trolling? Was it really so hard to figure out what I was saying?
-
if you're only going to play for about an hour and a half I dont see the point in stopping and starting all the time, so for me:
footy > rugby union > rugby league > gridiron
of course the ultimate sport is the one which takes a lifetime to learn and where matches can take 5 days to win ... ;)
-
I see no mention of Hockey here. :huh
-
Well with my experience...we have always called soccer players the football rejects. They arent big enough or dont have the guts to play football but they do make the best kickers for obvious reasons.
Course Im playing college ball right now so I might be a tad bias but whatever. I remember in high school couple soccer players tried to get big with me and the soccer coach told them to sit down as he would kill you, I dont need to lose any of my good players. I couldnt stop laughing after that.
When I was in London last summer I drank with a rugby team at a bar and they asked if I played football in the States as I did stand out as an American course I was bigger than any local that I saw. They said they dont know how Americans do it, one of them tried playing football at West Virginia and said he couldnt cut it. Between the size, the speed, and the endurance needed to lug around those pads. The stereotypes about football he said would be different if it was more popular in Europe.
-
Would be cool to see NFL athletes playing rugby. Ray lewis, james harrison, ed reed, sean taylor (RIP :( ) running down guys. Adrian Peterson and some others running the ball. Id pay to watch cross sports competition like that.

Ahhh Yup all the killings and rapes happen in the stands at soccer games. :)

But those are not the players! <---insert sarcasm
I love in some third world countries they have tanks at the stadiums incase of riots.
I will say, watching the world cup last summer was the most exciting sport series I have ever watched.

Don;t try talking sense to him. He already knows that if you are from around here this is how things are. He just forgot to explain it to the men team last year and the girls team yesterday that they are just little boys playing at the Y. I am sure he could out play any of those girls too :lol I wonder, how many of those boys and girls have a criminal record :lol

Which sport is for sissies again?
-
I use to lose about 6-8 pounds of water weight per game playing football in high school, so the endurance argument is moot. Its a different type of endurance, where football is more anaerobic and soccer is more aerobic. Football is a tough sport to play well, but I have all the respect in the world for soccer players, because it takes so much endurance to play a whole game as they do. Plus, I used to know some of the women soccer players at my alma mater and those gals were tough as nails--some of them you've seen on TV. Anyway, two very different sports. The biggest problem I have in the States is that in high school, both are fall sports. So, some of the best athletes in the school have to pick one or the other and can't participate in both. In my opinion, that's the biggest impediment to soccer gaining acceptance here. If you moved men's high school soccer to the spring, I think the argument about which one was tougher would be diminished.
-
I think its great you guys have your own football, like the aussies have theirs. I'm glad I wont be alive to see the day when everyone on this planet plays the same sports, speaks the same language, eats the same food. its like some kind of human drone nightmare. vive les differences! :D

Hmmm...you have to look at this from different areas....once you get to the dizzying heights of professionalism it is all pansified.....rule upon rule upon rule...not to say it isn't still hard. Football (US) I'm an each way on that as I have been bought up on rugby and leauge...and as Kazaa pointed out in one of his posts.....well I'll stop there.and the euro league soccer...hahahaha drama class drop outs......now to see how hard a sport is you need to look at grass roots in my opinion.....and let me tell you...for all those who don't think soccer is a contact sport..hahhaa...any way...when I was on the boats I had a mate who was staunch rugby..he used to down soccer..in fact there was no other sport to him......so I had a bet with him...that he couldn't last a full game of soccer...well we got to Samoa and organized a game of both soccer and rugby with the Samoan police.....talk about laugh....15 mins into the game my mate came over to me and said he would never hassle a soccer player again hahahaha.....he managed most of the game but was blowing so hard
the coolest thing about American football is that you can take down the carrier in just about any fashion you like....(word of warning...don't go up against an aussie football guy if he has this knowledge hahaha) that to me is a rough sport....and it doesn't matter how high up the ranks the team is...it is straight out carnage on those fields hahaha
-
Has anyone here ever played field hockey on a winters day while it has been pissing down with sleet? I have. Getting hit by what is effectively a cricket ball in those condition will leave a sting that would make even Chuck Norris cry.

I want to see a rugby player play american football, not a pick up game, actual football. I could guarantee that a rugby player couldn't take it.

wow could you decipher that hahahaha....I really shouldn't think I can type as fast as I can think hahaha...I should have given that a look over first.

Those videos do nothing but prove how stupid some people can be for doing those style hits without protective gear to prevent serious brain damage/concussions/serious injury.
No, it doesnt make you a real man, it makes you dumb for thinking that crap makes you a real man.

There have been only 3 sports that I'm unable to play competitively, Basketball (can't ever make a shot), Swimming/Waterpolo (not a fan of speedos), and Rugby. Rugby is probably the most tiring thing I have ever tried in my life, how ever it is a complete riot to play.

I didn't think a lot of these types of tackles were legal in Rugby?

I played American football for 11 years starting in 3rd grade. I played Rugby for six years as an adult. I enjoyed Rugby much more than American Football. Rugby has the best of both English Football and American Football.
So Rugby for the win!
YMMV.

yeah there was a couple of clothes lines and spear tackles.....depending on when they were carried out...the spear tackle is a relatively new rule...been around for some years now though...but still newish in regards to the rules pertaining to tackles
hahhah I thought I would look for some big hits in soccer and found this which I thought was quite cool
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzp-H5vfjsU&feature=fvst
and this is what I came up with for the soccer stuff..hahaha good laugh

Like I said in my above post..a major rugby player from London tried playing football at West Virginia a somewhat large college football program and couldnt cut saying it was damn hard to play. For the most part rugby players dont have the size, strength, or speed that the football players have in the States so the impact of the hits are much harder than what experienced in rugby.
For football...probably one of the scariest hits even seen. I prefer watching college football over the NFL as there are too many rules in the NFL and think that the players try 100x harder in college playing for their scholarship and to get to the next level. Taylor Mays is the perfect example of scary how many rugby players that big and that fast.

I played rugby all through school untill age 16 when the guys who were serious about it started getting REALLY big. (England takes their pick of my old school for scholorships - Matt Dawson for one)
I can tell you that when you take a head to head tackle in the chest from a guy nearly twice your size it is rather painfull. Always get back up right away though, they never took me off the pitch.
