Wow, I tuned into the Des Moines P.D...  Very first call was for a shooting at a Quik Trip.  A guy got shot with a pellet gun in the wrist and butt.  I tell ya, those dispachers are BUSY.

Been listening to my local one for a while through this website, even have an android app that I can use.  If you've never listened to a scanner it can take a little time to figure out the system and codes.  Sometimes you just hear a bunch of numbers and letters and not have a clue what they just said, but eventually you'll figure out the system.

Even if someone tells you what they're saying I still think it takes some time listening to train your ears for it.  It's similar to air traffic control, the first time someone listens to that, you can't understand a dang thing.

~7:30 pm, probabley the usual liquor grab-n-runners, everywhere has them.  It was many years ago, but one of my first jobs was at a grocery store, and starting at 3pm (school got out) until 2am we were supposed to keep a constant eye on the liquor isle security cameras and/or if the day was slow, staff someone as a "greeter" at the closest entrance/exit to the liquor isles.  And an hour before sunset, like clockwork, was the most typical time to catch someone trying to steal their favorite bottle.
