where did everything go wrong?
We ran out of real opponents to test our weapons systems on after Vietnam.

I have to agree with Eskimo on that, insurgents aren't really much of a threat that requires super advanced weapons, bunch of cowards that wave guns all over the place and creep out at night and put bombs everywhere then hide like cowards. And at this point a future war with a leading country doesn't seem likely.

I agree with this... but it makes one wonder, if this is truely the case why havent we accomplished our Mission Objectives? they are clearly just as capable as the Viet-Cong was in Vietnam, just a different ball game we havent adjusted too, I feel.
back on topic: I thought the F35's were combat ready....

In my opinion, it is always good to be prepared. we are the best-trained military in the world, however good, modern or ultra-modern equipment is usually essential.
Just imagine what the 1st Gulf War would have been like had it not been for our PGMs or the M1 tank. We can owe our safety not only to the sacrifices of men and women in uniform, but to the intimidation and deterrent a weapon like the F-22 stealth fighter or the JSF provides

After WW2 we downsized tremendously, defence budget was slashed, training and vehicle
maintenance went out of the window.
Then came the Korean conflict, we were totally ill-prepared to take it on at that time.
The US deaths initially, were the direct result.
It is imperative to have a strong Military, History shows that.

It's not their money... why should they worry.
