Some of you may remember the tank gunnery range I put out a couple years ago using static tanks for practicing ranging offline. That was before the big terrain graphics update, which changed the look of it (went from desert to jungle). I'm now making a new one that should be much nicer than the previous, plus adding a bombing range with a nearby airspawn so folks can practice jabo/level bombing targets, end flight, and be back over the range in a few seconds, eliminating the need to keep taking off & flying to the target area i.e. wasting game time. So I just wanted to give a heads up to whoever might be interested in such a thing to practice on. Will post preview pics soon. The actual terrain won't take long at all if work & family would give me a little free time. :salute

Not a problem. I should be able to knock something like this out in one night (tonight) since I won't have to worry about strats, roads, etc. It just needs a couple fields & the objects placed in a designated area of the map. I need to use it myself to get better at ranging with the new tank sighting system. :salute

No, but it will act as your own personal TA offline for tank ranging and/or jabo practice.

You guys do know you can change all of your offline drones to tanks sitting around your feild, any feild type. Then you can drive out away from the feild and work on your ranging that way. Or just for opetics ranging, spawn on a feild that you can drive to the end of a north facing runway on the ocean. Pull up the offline target. The center circle is 20 feet in diameter. Try dropping rounds in it at 2500 yards. It will just be showing resting on the water at that range.

I didn't forget about the terrain. I had to start over due to a hard drive crash. I lost all my AH stuff a few months ago & have rebuilding ever since. Expect it within the next few weeks. :salute

Question for those interested:
Should I hide some auto acks here & there, so that something fires back at you as you roam through the course? Ack lethality can always be turned down so that it doesn't do any damage, or the real studs could take them on at default settings.

It wouldnt hurt. It would give us some things to watch for just as if we were on the battlefield. ;)

Perhaps somewhere along the course could you give us a hilltop firing position, complete with a long range base and/or town to shoot at?

Would be interesting to have a Tank range based on the specific tank for example there would be 6-7 ranges each by distance with 2 copies of a single tank, example range 1 would be an M4a3(76) facing you at 500/1000/1500/2000 yards while a second M4a3 is turned sideways.
Range two would be a T34/85, range three a Panther and so on.
The reason for 2 tanks is so people can understand the size of the "silhouette" is how you learn to range a tank, obviously the larger the silhouette the closer the tank, using one facing you and and sideways, gives a good clear idea of what you are looking for and how to range.
Just ideas, someone was asking about this earlier how to "judge" the range. :cheers:

In the terrain editor, it is possible to add non-strat supplying convoys & trains simply for eye candy purposes. Thinking about throwing some of those in also for moving targets.

I like the roving trains we used to have.... or how bout packs of whirbs near bridges or towns

There will be plenty of targets. Just please remember that these are static GV targets. They will not fire back or move. That is why I'll add the ack guns, convoys & trains, just so there is some life going on.

Getting free time has been tough lately, but I wanted to show I've have been making progress. Finishing the jabo range this week & then just have the tank range to go. :salute

Jabo range is 90% done. Just gotta overlay the tile containing the targets tomorrow.

The player will airspawn a few miles south and 7,000 ft. above the practice range. That way the player can drop his bombs, bail, re-spawn,
and be back over the range in just over a minute with a fresh set of bombs for maximum time efficiency. Tank range coming next.

Thanks Ping. Going as fast as I can. Super busy working 60 hours a week and then come home to four daughters (single dad). I'm trying to build something that not only players can use offline to practice, but trainers could use in the custom arenas to hold clinics. I'm just hoping it comes out like I envision. :)

Sadly, a bit of a delay, or it'd be finished by now. As of the game update where we got the storch, something in the tank range is making me CTD every time I get within vis range of the two tiles I built that make up the range. It never crashed before the update and I'm using only AH objects, so I don't have an answer at this time. Looks like I'll be rebuilding the range using different objects & see if it works. Sorry for the delay. :salute

psssst......... you didn't hear it here, but I heard if you hang out near the smoking targets long enough ....... u will see magical colors and the girl with the kaleidescope eyes. I think it has something to do with the new "vegetation" added in the last version.

I'm thinking about releasing the dive bombing range by itself and doing the tanking range on its own terrain, since the bombing range has been done for awhile.

I think USRanger should be hired full time by HTC to make maps, lots of wonderful maps. First, a few winter maps, then a few desert maps, then maybe some Eastern Front open plains maps with some rolling hills. All middle to large size.

Thanks all. It appears the the tank range tiles are salvagable(sp) after all. With some reverse enjo-neering, I discovered that the grass clutter objects I had sprinkled here & there for decoration, don't get along with the new ground clutter system, causing a CTD every time the tiles came into view. I have removed the grass objects (don't need em anymore with the new clutter system) and everything is working as it should again.

ya a hide a few so you can't shoot them from a distance. The only/best way to get them would be "fire on the run" type move :devil

It's all done except for finishing up adding the tanks. It will be out tomorrow night. I had a hold up that appears to be unavoidable. The way the static tank objects are coded, only HE rounds will destroy them. You can still hit them with AP & get a nice explosive hit, but the only way the tanks will disappear is to hit them with HE. I tried setting them to every object type I could & set the hardness down to a thousandth of default and still the tanks will not explode with AP. Finally after exhausting all known options, I conferred with MrMidi of the CM Terrain Team and he confirmed that the problem is the way they are coded & not any object or arena setting. I still think the ranges came out great and look forward to sharing them. I'll go work on it now until FSO time. :salute

I say we all pitch in $20 and send it to him for services rendered and services commissioned for in the future. ;)
I'd love for USRanger to develop a desert map with few trees, gentle rolling hills, small yet steep mounds that can not be traversed, etc, etc. Think North Africa or even Eastern Front (albeit more green). :D

I'll see what I can do.
I plan on adding the necessary prerequisites for this terrain to be uploaded for online use for squad training in the custom arenas. Probably do that this weekend. When it's done, I'll upload it to the server. All a player will have to do is select the terrain when hosting a custom arena. :salute
